On July 22nd, the athlete village of the 31st Summer Universiade, located on the campus of Chengdu University, officially opened. As an important venue for athletes to reside and live during the Chengdu Universiade, more than 100 delegations with nearly 8000 people will be stationed during the competition.
How to embody the concept of "green, smart, vibrant, and shared" in the Universiade Village, which has a total construction area of approximately 660000 square meters, 10 apartments, 2 athlete restaurants, as well as service guarantee facilities such as delegation service centers, medical centers, and fitness centers? What are the intimate, tangible, and visible technological experiences in the field of green, low-carbon, and smart living? The reporter visited Dayun Village on July 23rd.
Green and low-carbon integration into architectural design
As the largest non competition venue for the Chengdu Universiade, the construction of the Universiade Village began in May 2019 and was completed for inspection in March 2021. This is the first time since the World University Summer Games that an athlete's village has been built on a university campus.
The relevant person in charge of Dayun Village stated that the "green and low-carbon" concept has been integrated into the construction and operation of Dayun Village. This is not only reflected in the products listed in the low-carbon product certification catalog, or energy-saving and environmentally friendly materials, but also in the systematic implementation of building design, building informatization, building materials and greening.
In order to reduce damage to the original terrain, the main part of the building of the Dayun Village Delegation Service Center was erected on the hillside, while the outdoor streets located on the hillside were divided into two ends, falling from the hillside to the foot of the mountain, forming two "trumpet mouths" with one end facing northeast and the other end facing south.
This is a unique energy-saving design for buildings. "In fluid mechanics, such a spatial model is called a 'Venturi tube', and in traditional Chinese architecture, it is called a 'cold alley'. Its principle is to use the 'Bernoulli effect', which means that when the airflow passes through an area that becomes wider and narrower, the velocity increases, forming a negative pressure, bringing more outdoor airflow and taking away more indoor hot air and moisture." The person in charge of Dayun Village said that in this area known as the 'Valley of Wind', a relatively comfortable shared space can be obtained through the guidance of natural wind, thereby reducing building energy consumption and reducing building carbon emissions. "This area can save 70000 kWh of electricity per year because it does not require air conditioning. Calculated at 3600 kWh per year for an ordinary household, it can meet a household's electricity consumption for 20 years," the person in charge said.
Smart life showcases technological charm
The Universiade Village, consisting of four parts: residential area, operational area, international area, and transportation area, is one of the venues that provides the longest service guarantee time, from its opening on July 22 to its closure on August 11. During the event, this venue will provide multiple services such as accommodation, catering, fitness, and cultural exchange for the delegation.
The Welcome Center of Dayun Village is the first stop for members of delegations from various countries to officially start their lives in Dayun Village. In front of the service desk here, there is a special row of "black boxes", which is the Dayun Village Intelligent Translation and Intercom System. This device adopts new technologies such as neural network machine translation, speech recognition, semantic understanding, speech synthesis, and four microphone arrays. It will provide online translation, text conversion, and speech synthesis services for 83 languages during the Universiade. In addition to face-to-face translation in the welcome center and registration center, the system will also run through the village's communication network, enabling seamless communication between users no matter where they are in the Dayun Village.
Grinding, filtering, adding water, brewing, and pulling flowers... In the athlete's restaurant, the two "mechanical coffee arms" of the intelligent unmanned coffee machine are flexible and stable, and can "deliver" a cup of coffee in just 90 seconds. The product manager introduced that there are a total of 8 devices installed in the village, which can not only produce various flavors of coffee, but also customize the logo of the Universiade as a coffee flower pattern. Not only coffee, but also the "Sichuan snacks" in the restaurant can be "customized". The intelligent unmanned snack machine here can produce panda rice dumpling, chicken Wonton and other dishes in only 2 minutes. The person in charge of the product said that the device integrates functions such as fully automatic order taking, cooking, serving, and calling. Even if there is no one on duty 24 hours a day, it can analyze and supplement production in a timely manner based on consumption, and complete automatic cleaning, disinfection, and packaging procedures.
How will volunteers and staff of the Chengdu Universiade cope with high temperatures in the scorching summer? A cooling ice vest made of PCM developed by a local enterprise in Chengdu will be widely used in the Dayun Village. The person in charge of the product said that the vest can absorb or release heat through its own material phase transformation, and form a relatively constant microclimate around the clothing according to changes in environmental temperature, achieving temperature regulation function. "When in use, just put the 'inner core' in the refrigerator half an hour in advance, and it can provide continuous' cooling 'for 2 hours outdoors at over 30 degrees Celsius."
