India will invite the African Union to become a full member of the G20 African Union | Member | G20
Recently, India stated at the B20 meeting that it will focus on the difficulties and development prospects of the African Union at this year's G20 summit, and invited it to become a formal member of the G20.
Indian Prime Minister Modi stated at a B20 meeting held in New Delhi on August 27th that India, as the host of this year's G20 summit, will focus on developing countries and propose that the African Union officially become a member of the G20. Modi pointed out, "We have an inclusive vision, and based on this vision, we have invited the African Union to become a full member of the G20."
It is worth noting that US President Joe Biden also expressed in December last year that he hoped the African Union would "join the G20 and become a full member state.".
At the same time, India also calls on the G20 to reach consensus on the issues faced by developing countries and southern countries. These issues include unsustainable debt, inflation, and climate change. Analysts point out that incorporating the African Union into the G20 is key to this strategy.
"We are well aware that Africa and most southern countries will not sit at the table during our meetings," said Indian Foreign Minister Jachankar. "This is very important because the truly urgent issue is the one they face. And India itself is a part of the southern countries and will not stand idly by and let this situation happen."
Jia Shangkar stated that the G20 has so far considered issues affecting low - and middle-income countries such as rising debt, sustainable development, climate action, and food security. "The core task of the G20 is to promote economic growth and development. However, without addressing key issues in African and southern countries, economic growth and development cannot be promoted."
