I won't even collapse!, Chinese Scientists: We Are Not Afraid of Restrictions | United States | Chinese Scientists
On August 11th, the website of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong reported that Chinese scientists said, "We will not feel afraid" in the face of restrictions on US high-tech investment in China.
According to reports, Chinese scientists believe that the impact of US investment restrictions on some of China's so-called sensitive technologies will be limited, as these fields have become less reliant on US funding in recent years.
Li Zhimin, Vice President and Director of the Academic Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology Assessment and Achievement Management, said that these restrictive measures have "more political implications". He said that the United States has long been vigilant about China's progress in these areas.
For a long time, China's technology industry has been a destination for American venture capital investment, but with the intensification of geopolitical tensions, the speed of American investment in China's technology industry has significantly slowed down.
Li Zhimin said, "Previously, the United States had some investments in the semiconductor industry, but now they have stopped. Investment in quantum technology or artificial intelligence fields stopped four to five years ago."
The report states that several Chinese scientists engaged in quantum technology research agree with this statement.
"Chinese companies do not rely on foreign investment in this field, so the new restrictions imposed by the United States have little impact on us," said Wang Chao, General Manager of Shanghai Xunwei Quantum Technology Co., Ltd
He also said that in recent years, China's dependence on US investment in semiconductors and artificial intelligence has also decreased.
A Chinese quantum physicist who founded a startup is not surprised by the latest restrictions imposed by the United States. The scientist, who declined to be named, stated that four years ago he had rejected investment requests from several American venture capitalists because he was concerned that such investments could cause trouble as Sino US relations deteriorated.
According to reports, as Beijing invests more funds in the technology sector to achieve its goal of technological self-reliance and self-improvement, some see the latest restrictions from the United States as an opportunity.
An investor in Shanghai who focuses on Chinese high-tech enterprises said, "China will continue to promote technological progress and firmly support domestic alternative products, so the withdrawal of US capital is an opportunity for us to enter the market."
Li Zhimin also believes that the restrictions imposed by the United States may motivate Chinese scientists and potentially "drive the development of these industries.".
According to reports, Associate Professor Zeng Liaoyuan from the School of Information and Communication Engineering at Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology believes that Chinese universities and research institutes are prepared to impose restrictions on the United States.
Zeng Liaoyuan said, "We will not feel scared, let alone collapse. We will continue to find ways to enhance China's technological strength in these fields."
