I was still on a consultation the day before my death!, Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Dean Died at the Age of 80 in Guangdong | Wu Weicheng | Guangdong
On August 6th, the reporter learned from the Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University that the former director of the hospital, Wu Weicheng, passed away on August 4th at the age of 80. On the morning of August 3rd, the day before his death, Wu Weicheng was still in the hospital outpatient department.
Wu Weicheng is a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in Guangdong Province, and a guiding teacher for inheriting academic experience from the fourth and fifth batch of national level experts in traditional Chinese medicine. As the senior dean of Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, he worked in the hospital for more than 50 years from 1971 to 2023. From a general doctor to a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in Guangdong Province, behind my personal growth history lies a generation's memory of the times.
Having been in the medical profession for over 50 years
I was still out of the clinic the morning before my death
Wu Weicheng's ancestral home is Shunde, Guangdong. Starting from his great grandfather in the late Qing Dynasty, he has been practicing medicine for four generations. He learned traditional Chinese medicine from his father when he was young, inherited his family history, recited Fang Ge and recognized traditional Chinese medicine from the age of 6. He was admitted to Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1962. After graduation, he worked in a basic hospital for two years, and then returned to work in Guangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine until now.
On April 12, 2007, Wu Weicheng suffered a sudden myocardial infarction and was urgently hospitalized for emergency treatment. When the student visited him, he did not talk about his own condition, but reminded the student to leave the clinic on time and not let the patient's medication stop.
Wu Weicheng also has gout, which has occurred multiple times and often leaves the clinic after taking medication. There was another time when he had a herniated intervertebral disc, and his waist and legs were so painful that he couldn't sit down. So he stood and prescribed medicine to the patient's pulse. Later, Wu Weicheng developed a degenerative disease in his right knee joint, often accompanied by pain and mobility disorders. After a day of outpatient treatment, his right knee often became stiff and unbearable, requiring activity before walking. Despite this, Wu Weicheng still insisted on outpatient treatment.
In his later years and advanced age, he persisted in weekly consultations and was still out of the clinic on the morning of August 3rd, the day before his death, guiding his apprentice in medical knowledge.

Wu Weicheng, who is 80 years old, has retired from the position of director of Guangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital for 21 years, but has been in a working state, not leaving behind any outpatient services, book writing, or mentoring.
He has been in the medical profession for over 50 years, and every time he visits, he arrives at the consultation room early, postpones work, and tries to extend the visit time as much as possible. Sometimes the number source is already full, but whenever a patient requests an additional number, they agree.
His patients come from all over the country and even abroad, and he understands the hardships of the patient's journey back and forth, so he tries to meet their requirements as much as possible. He said, "Doctors should have empathy, enthusiasm, heart, and love."
His disciple, Dr. Gao Sande, who specializes in pre treatment diseases, said that although Wu Weicheng is old, no matter how tired he is, he never refuses to give patients extra treatment. "The teacher said that many patients come by plane from other places, and some take a long drive from rural areas to arrive. Refusing them, how can we bear it?"
During diagnosis and treatment, Wu Weicheng did not value the speed of seeking medical treatment, but rather sought the quality of treatment, because many patients came to him after traveling many places. They often carried a large stack of examination results from other hospitals, while also harboring many doubts. Wu Weicheng always carefully examines the patient's information, patiently answers their questions, and carefully prescribes medication for them.

He stated that this award is a milestone in his medical career, providing talent support for the development of the hospital. In order to better assist in the education of traditional Chinese medicine teachers in the hospital, he donated a 100000 yuan bonus as a fund for the development of traditional Chinese medicine teacher education in the hospital, hoping to promote the training of the younger generation of doctors in the hospital.

After the death of Wu Weicheng, hospital staff said, "The person has passed away, and the spirit will remain forever... We will always remember Mr. Wu Weicheng's achievements and cherish his memory. We will take great strides on the path of traditional Chinese medicine inheritance created by predecessors such as Dean Wu, and move forward courageously."
