"I got another stab in the back," Bosonaro said
According to a report by Effe on June 30th, former Brazilian President Bosonaro stated in a statement to the media that the ruling made by the High Electoral Court on June 30th, claiming that he had abused his power and improperly used public media in the 2022 elections, depriving him of his candidacy until 2030, was a blow to his back.
The report stated that the far right leader of Brazil immediately responded to the ruling of the highest electoral authority and mentioned his attack in 2018. He said, "Not long ago, I was stabbed in the abdomen, but now with my political power being stripped of the charge of abuse, I have been stabbed in the back again."
According to reports, the 68 year old far right leader has expressed interest in running for the 2026 presidential election, but he will not be able to run for elected positions or hold public administration positions for eight years from October 2022.
Bosonaro also stated that the ruling is not yet "guaranteed" and he will discuss with lawyers the possibility of appealing to the election court and the Supreme Court.
According to a report by Efi, Brazilian Minister of Justice Flavio Dino stated on June 30 that the ruling of the electoral court allows the government to assess the possibility of seeking compensation for the damage caused by Bosonaro.
Dino said, "The court's ruling proves that the judicial system and legal order have been improperly attacked. For this reason, I will submit an application to the government prosecutor's office to analyze the possibility of claiming compensation from them."
The minister explained that once the court finds that Bosonaro has inappropriately attacked the credibility of the electoral judiciary, the government can demand that he "compensate for the damage he has caused to the judiciary and society itself.".
According to reports, the core of this trial was a meeting held by Bosonaro with nearly 50 foreign ambassadors at the Presidential Palace on July 18, 2022, during which he questioned the transparency of the electoral system and the democratic system itself.
The court held that Bosonaro's crimes included "abuse of political power, prohibited behavior and information chaos" and "improper use of public property and media", as he ordered public television stations to broadcast this activity.
According to reports, like Dino, Alexander Padilla, Minister of the Secretariat for Institutional Relations at the Brazilian Presidential Office, stated that the verdict on Bosonaro is the "first step" and that "there are still many things that need to be investigated and punished.".
