Hong Kong SAR Government: The US Should Fulfill Its Responsibility and Invite the Chief Executive to Attend Meetings in accordance with APEC Practice
According to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government website, in response to media inquiries, the Washington Post quoted so-called news that the United States has decided not to allow the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to attend the informal meeting of APEC leaders. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government reiterated on the 28th that the United States should fulfill its basic responsibility as the host country and invite the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to attend the meeting as a leader of Hong Kong, China, in accordance with the usual and consistent practices of the APEC.
The SAR government stated that the organization of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has its consistent rules and customs in organizing meetings. According to the guidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) hosting meetings, leaders of APEC member economies will be invited to attend informal leadership meetings, and the host country is responsible for sending invitation letters to the leaders of each member economy to facilitate their attendance at the meeting.
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference does not belong to any particular country or economy, and APEC also has its own rules and customs. Any host must invite members to participate in accordance with these rules and customs. The SAR government has repeatedly expressed the above position publicly.
