Hiroshima Mayor's Speech: Abolish Nuclear Weapons, 78th Anniversary of Nuclear Explosions Hiroshima | Nuclear Weapons | Nuclear Explosions
According to Reuters on August 6th, Japan held a ceremony on August 6th to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the United States atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Hiroshima City Mayor Ichiro Matsui has called for the abolition of nuclear weapons, believing that the nuclear deterrence theory mentioned by the leaders of the G7 is "foolish".
Hiroshima is the constituency where Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is located and became a focus of attention in May this year, as he hosted the G7 summit in the area. The leaders of the G7 expressed their commitment to nuclear disarmament in a statement, but also claimed that nuclear weapons should play a role in curbing aggression and preventing war as long as they continue to exist.
According to reports, Hiroshima City Mayor Ichiro Matsui said at a commemorative ceremony, "World leaders must face the reality that the nuclear threats being issued by certain decision-makers reveal the foolishness of nuclear deterrence theory."
A United Nations representative read out the speech of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres: "Leaders of various countries have visited the city of Hiroshima, admired the monument, and talked to brave survivors, demonstrating the courage to advance the cause of nuclear disarmament. We need to make more efforts, because the drums of nuclear war are once again ringing."
On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb named "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima. On August 15th, Japan announced its surrender.
