"Relying on four major parts: photovoltaic power generation system, geothermal heating and cooling system, energy storage system, and smart energy management system, the airport adopts renewable energy to meet energy demand, thereby achieving zero carbon electricity consumption, zero carbon heating, zero carbon cooling, and zero carbon services." said Wen Qingyuan, Deputy General Manager of Shuozhou Nourishing Airport.
Shuozhou is a city built and prospered by coal. In recent years, the local party committee and government have firmly grasped the core of "high-quality development" and accelerated the construction of a modern green city on the border by promoting a series of major projects.
Standing on the viewing platform of middling coal Pingshuo Ecological Culture Industrial Park, the sparkling lake and lush trees form a harmonious ecological picture.
"Can you imagine? This was once a barren mining area." Li Chunyu, director of the ecological management office of the ecological industry management center of middling coal Pingshuo Group Co., Ltd., pointed to the scene and sighed.
As the largest coal production enterprise in the local area, the coal produced by Pingshuo Group not only provides energy security for the national economic construction, but also follows the concept of "mining while repairing" since its self built mine. It has also put on a "green dress" for the former mines and regained ecological value.
After more than 30 years of persistent efforts, the area of Pingshuo Group's reclamation area has exceeded 70000 acres, including 20000 acres of arable land and 50000 acres of forest land. Wandering in the reclamation area, insects chirping and birds chirping incessantly, and various wild animals occasionally emerge, as if in a primitive forest.

"Nowadays, the vegetation coverage rate of the park has reached over 95%, far higher than the vegetation coverage rate of less than 10% of the original landforms." Li Chunyu said that after the environmental improvement, biodiversity has also become increasingly abundant. Currently, 213 types of plants, more than 600 types of insects, and more than 30 types of wild animals have been discovered.
According to the principle of "whoever mines, who governs, mining while governing", Shuozhou City guides mines to carry out comprehensive management of the "three zones" in accordance with the industry standards for green mining construction. As of now, 64 coal mining enterprises in the city have cumulatively managed about 161400 acres of land, and 113 non coal mining enterprises have cumulatively managed 3035.85 acres of land.
The earth has turned green, and the water in Shuozhou has gradually become abundant and clear. In the No. 1 tunnel of the North Main Line of the Yellow River Diversion Project in the upper reaches of the Qili River, a tributary of the Sanggan River, the Yellow River water flows non-stop day and night through pumping units to the Sanggan River. From 2016 to 2022, the city of Shuozhou has implemented a total of 1.059 billion cubic meters of ecological water replenishment from the Yellow River, and 839 million cubic meters have been discharged from the Shuozhou area, resulting in continuous improvement of the water ecological environment.

"In the past, both sides of the riverbank were urban villages and workshops, and domestic and industrial wastewater were directly discharged into the river. They dared not stay here for a long time in the summer," said a person in charge of the Sanggan River Management Committee in Shuozhou City. Starting from 2020, Shuozhou City launched the "Clean River Action" along the Sanggan River, with the goal of dredging, controlling pollution, reinforcing embankments, greening banks, increasing water supply, and promoting business. Daily scheduling was carried out, and in two years, the Sanggan River was transformed into a beautiful scenery today.
Nowadays, the water quality of the Shuozhou section of the Sanggan River remains stable at Class III surface water quality. The proportion of national examination sections in Shuozhou City that reach or exceed Class III water quality reaches 100%, and all inferior Class V sections are eliminated. The Shanyin section of the Sanggan River Wetland Park has been selected as a national wetland park. More than ten rare wild migratory birds, including black storks, white storks, and gulls, have settled in the Sanggan River basin.
Green mountains and clear waters, walking with songs. Shuozhou City adheres to the path of ecological priority and green development, and a magnificent new landscape of a green city on the border is slowly unfolding.
