The 31st Chengdu Summer Universiade is approaching, and meteorological services have entered a critical moment. Faced with the complex and ever-changing weather during the flood season, meteorologists are on high alert, serving as the vanguard for the smooth opening of the Universiade.
In the opening and closing ceremonies of the Universiade, performances related to Weiya should consider the influence of low-level winds, and the lighting of torches in the main venue also involves precise monitoring of wind direction and speed... This also means that refined services are the key to high-quality meteorological support for the Universiade. Under the command and deployment of the China Meteorological Administration and the Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Administration, the Chengdu Meteorological Department has deployed a "4+4+1+3" combined meteorological observation system based on the observation system of the Beijing Winter Olympics at the Dong'an Lake Sports Center, the venue of the opening ceremony of the Universiade; A "3+1" combined meteorological observation system was installed in the outdoor music park at the closing ceremony, providing multi-dimensional support for the monitoring of venue meteorological data.
In the rowing area of the Universiade in Xinjin District, Chengdu, a blue device equipped with various meteorological equipment floats on the water surface. This is an automatic water weather station specially designed for the Universiade. Compared with ground monitoring elements, the wind, temperature, humidity, and other factors detected on water are significantly different. For example, when the wind blows over the ground, it is obstructed by buildings, trees, and other obstacles, resulting in a significant decrease in wind speed. However, when it comes to water, these obstacles are fewer and the wind speed is much higher than on the ground. Through real-time monitoring by automatic weather stations on water, precise factors such as wind direction, wind speed, air pressure, visibility, wave height, and water temperature that affect the water surface of the competition area can be provided, providing meteorological service support for rowing competitions.
In addition, the meteorological department of Chengdu has also deployed 6 sets of full waveform 3D lightning detectors for lightning monitoring and early warning systems, which monitor real-time information such as the activity time, activity area, lightning height, frequency, and discharge intensity of thunderstorms; The 20 sets of ground electric field instruments deployed monitor the changes in atmospheric electric field intensity in the competition venue area in real time, providing support for meteorological and lightning monitoring and early warning services for the competition. Wu Junwei, the head of the Detection Department of the Chengdu Meteorological Bureau, said, "Various intelligent advanced equipment helps with precise meteorological monitoring, adding to the empowerment of meteorological support for the Chengdu Universiade."
"Seven down and eight up" is a crucial flood prevention period that makes all meteorologists nervous. From July 10th to 13th, Chengdu experienced its first regional heavy rainfall process since the start of the flood season. The meteorological station of the Universiade used advanced detection equipment such as newly built phased array radar to activate the "tracking" mode in advance, accurately predicting the main areas of this round of heavy rainfall weather process, and seizing the "advance" for the city's flood prevention work, winning the initiative for disaster prevention and reduction work of various departments.
As a powerful tool for supporting precise monitoring, forecasting, and service, radar can effectively improve the monitoring capability of severe convective weather. Based on the characteristics of meteorological support during the Universiade, the meteorological department of Chengdu has installed five world-class X-band phased array weather radars, with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and a time resolution of 1 minute. The detection is carried out using a phase shifted electrical scanning method, achieving "close, fine, and low visibility", effectively improving the early warning of small and medium-sized severe convective weather systems throughout Chengdu. At the same time, three sets of tropospheric wind profile radar systems will be newly built, and the existing eight sets of boundary layer wind profile radar systems will be networked to carry out vertical wind direction and wind speed observations per hundred meters, providing data support for high-resolution numerical forecasting models and short-term analysis and forecasting of severe convective weather.
From the ground to the air, from a point to an entire area, a comprehensive monitoring network with high density, wide coverage, and multiple elements is becoming increasingly dense. The meteorological guardians with different detection ranges and elements provide targeted monitoring services for the meteorological observation of the Chengdu Universiade, ensuring the smooth progress of the event.
