He graduated as the first in his grade and studied in the Youth Class at the University of Science and Technology of China
Four years ago, Chen Baoji was admitted to the famous Youth Class at the University of Science and Technology of China with excellent grades. Four years later, he graduated with the highest academic ranking in his grade and is about to pursue a doctoral degree at the world-renowned research institution, the Max Planck Institute in Germany.
How did this "child from another family" in the eyes of a parent and the "god of learning" in the eyes of a classmate be refined?
Curiosity is the "key" to exploring the unknown world
TV, computer, microwave, refrigerator, washing machine... These household appliances were all dismantled by Chen Baoji when he was a child.
After dismantling, what appears before us is a pile of complex circuit boards. In order to figure out how they work, Chen Baoji tried every means to read books and search for information. After figuring it out, he reassembled the household appliances.
All of this, parents see it in their eyes and silently support it. The unconditional support of his parents effectively protected Chen Baoji's curiosity.
Curiosity is the key to exploring the unknown world; The passion for exploring the unknown world is often the beginning of scientific enlightenment. The dream of being a "scientist" nurtured by curiosity deeply influenced Chen Baoji. He naturally chose the China University of Science and Technology, known as the "cradle of technological talents," and was admitted to the Youth College through independent enrollment.
At the University of Science and Technology of China, Chen Baoji's curiosity was further ignited. Because we can choose our major 100% independently, we have multiple opportunities to make mistakes. At the beginning of our freshman year, after strict selection, Chen Baoji entered the "Yan Jici Physics Technology Talent Class".
This class has maintained a high continuing education rate of 98% since its establishment in 2009. A group of new technological stars have emerged, including Cao Yuan, a graphene genius hailed by netizens as a "tsunami level aftermath".
The University of Science and Technology of China encourages undergraduate students to enter the laboratory. Chen Baoji entered Professor Cao Gang's laboratory at the School of Physics in his sophomore year and served as a course assistant for Professor Wang Zhongping at the Physics Experimental Teaching Center from his junior year.
Chen Baoji, who also has a strong interest in computer science, has taken multiple computer courses. Chen Baoji wrote several course papers on quantum mechanics, computational physics, electromagnetics, optics, atomic physics, and university physics experiments, which were awarded at the university level.
To know its nature, it is even more important to know its reasons
Curiosity is just a key, to truly enter the world of exploration, it requires deep learning and thinking.
In elementary school, there were requirements for reciting poems and ancient texts. At the beginning, Chen Baoji diligently memorized from the book, but his efficiency was not high. Later, his parents guided him to first understand the meaning of each line of poetry, and then memorize it. After trying, he found that memory based on understanding is much simpler than simply rote memorization.
So Chen Baoji explored three "magic weapons": to know "what" everything is, to figure out "why", and then reproduce "how to do it". "Simply put, we need to know its nature, and even more so, we need to know its reasons," said Chen Baoji. "Thinking is joyful.".
Once, Chen Baoji attended a school organized evening party and during the interactive session, he found it inconvenient to interact on and off stage. He thought it would be great if he could develop a live interactive bullet screen wall. So he started writing the program by hand, but during the debugging process, the screen always stuttered. After investigation, it was found that it was not caused by common network or server failures. It's a bit difficult to troubleshoot through thousands of lines of code one by one.
During that period, Chen Baoji had been observing the various manifestations of the computer and pondering the root cause of the malfunction. One day, the weather was very hot, and he suddenly remembered that people are prone to thinking difficulties in hot environments. Would computers have similar problems? Through investigation, he found that it was indeed due to the high ambient temperature that the computer's central processing unit overheated, causing fluctuations in performance and inconsistent software and hardware pacing, leading to lag. So, he added a dynamic synchronization module to the program and successfully solved the problem.
Thinking never stops. In his subsequent scientific research practice, Chen Baoji actively utilized computers to simulate the properties of physical devices and assist in the device design process. On the basis of understanding the principles of simulation, optimizing the model and adjusting parameters can reduce the amount of ineffective calculations and improve the efficiency of computer problem-solving.
He also turned the modeling and data processing process that originally required manual operation into a fully automated "one-stop" by writing programs, and ultimately increased the computing speed by more than ten times. Tasks that originally took one or two hours to complete now only take a few minutes or even minutes.
Self discipline is the key to having the freedom of choice
In the highly skilled youth class at the University of Science and Technology, the academic GPA is as high as 4.12, ranking first in the grade; Received multiple national and school level competition awards and published two academic papers as the first author; Participating in volunteer services, undertaking teaching assistant work, providing technical support for various campus activities, or being a positive and beneficial youth nationwide
In the eyes of the homeroom teacher Tang Ning, Chen Baoji is a college student with comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor skills; In the eyes of his classmates, he is an all-around "learning god" who balances both in class and out of class; In the view of Teacher Wang Zhongping, his teaching assistant work is not only serious, responsible, rigorous, and meticulous, but also courageous in innovation and good at inspiration, designing multiple experimental teaching plans.
If excellence is a habit, habits need to be developed. How did Chen Baoji achieve it?
The secret is strict self-discipline. Time is fair to everyone, and being able to efficiently utilize and improve efficiency is the key to success. Chen Baoji has developed a habit of regular routines since childhood. Even though he has completed his graduation defense with excellent grades, he still adheres to the daily routine of "711". Go to bed at 11pm on time, wake up at 7am on time, and be full of energy every day.
The method is to "make a plan". Strictly follow the plan, diligently complete every learning task and activity arrangement, and achieve "one clear day"; When encountering difficulties, immediately consult information and never delay; Sort things according to their importance and urgency, making time management more efficient.
Having spent a happy and fulfilling four years of university life at the University of Science and Technology of China, Chen Baoji, who is about to cross the ocean to continue his studies, is full of gratitude to the school. "The school has given me a quiet desk, allowing me to stay grounded and look up at the stars."; I am full of expectations for the future and hope to bravely move forward on the path of scientific exploration with the confidence and confidence given to me by the University of Science and Technology.
