Hangzhou Police: Due to low battery and automatic descent, a girl was scratched in the face by a drone while flying in the bustling city | Drone | Police
On the evening of June 5th, a young girl was scratched on her face by a drone propeller that fell from the sky on the pedestrian street in Hubin, Hangzhou. According to the report from the Public Security Bureau of Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, on June 6th, the police found the control personnel that night and confirmed that the flight had been reported in advance according to regulations. However, during the journey, the drone automatically landed due to insufficient battery, causing the girl to be scratched.
At around 20:00 on the 5th, the Hubin Pedestrian Street in Hangzhou was crowded with people. Witnesses reported that the girl involved and her companions were shopping when a drone fell from somewhere and hit her in the face, causing her face to bleed instantly.
The police officers from the Shangcheng Public Security Bureau, who were patrolling nearby, quickly arrived at the scene and found that it was a DJI mini3Pro drone with less than one grid left on the battery display and a low battery indicator light flashing. The police immediately took the girl to the hospital. The police said on the 6th that the girl's face was scratched, and the extent of the injury needs further assessment.
"That night, the person who controlled this drone was found. He was filming a promotional video for the unit and had already reported it in advance. However, the drone ran out of power during filming and landed on a pedestrian street, injuring a girl. Subjectively, there was no malicious intent," the relevant person in charge of the Shangcheng Public Security Bureau told Pengpai News.
According to the police, the use of drones within the administrative area of Hangzhou must comply with relevant laws, regulations, and rules, and complete procedures such as airworthiness qualifications, flight qualifications, and plan declaration. Units and individuals in the city who own drones must go through the "Police Uncle APP - Zhejiang Flight" port of Hangzhou Public Security to register information and report flight according to the drone registration process.
According to the sales page of the official flagship store of DJI Tmall, this mini3Pro drone is priced at over 4000 yuan, with a standard battery life of 34 minutes and a long battery life of 47 minutes, with a maximum ascent speed of 5 meters per second and a maximum descent speed of 1.5 meters per second. The product introduction page displays the slogan "How to fly, safety is always the top priority", stating that the product has three directional obstacle avoidance and multi face detection functions, an increased range of obstacle detection, and a super safe drone. At the same time, it has a flight assistance system that can detect objects on the flight path in real time, and can flexibly avoid obstacles even in complex environments.
"It has a low battery return function. When the battery is low, the machine automatically returns to the return point and lands. The machine also has an obstacle avoidance system, so it will not fall during the return process." The reporter asked as a consumer, and customer service answered online.
Pengpai News has noticed that although manufacturers claim to have safety, incidents of drone injuries have occurred from time to time. In November 2020, a 3-year-old girl in Wuhan was hit by a drone while playing on the lawn, causing traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage in the right temporal region and a comminuted fracture of the right temporal skull. The court sentenced the drone operator to compensate 194000 yuan. In 2021, a man in Jiangxi province was investigated by the police for injuring a 5-year-old child's face while operating a drone to land in a square. In August 2022, a drone lost control and fell from Yongchuan People's Square in Chongqing, hitting a girl in the head.
