According to a report by Efi, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived in the Haitian capital, Port au Prince, on July 1st for a visit. He will meet with Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry and call on the international community to support the country in dealing with the serious crisis it is experiencing.
A brief announcement released by the United Nations stated that Guterres arrived in Port au Prince on the 1st, where most areas have been damaged by violent groups, "to express solidarity with the Haitian people who are experiencing a tragic cycle of security, political, and humanitarian crises.".
Guterres tweeted, "Now is not the time to forget Haiti," and said he wants to "call on the international community to continue supporting Haiti, including providing a strong international force to assist the Haitian National Police.".
The United Nations announcement shows that during this visit, which did not specify the duration, Guterres will "listen to the opinions of multiple political party leaders, members of the High Transitional Council, civil society organizations, and United Nations staff.".
The United Nations says that in some areas of Haiti, homicide, rape, and kidnapping incidents are almost ongoing. The United Nations has recently warned that due to the authorities being powerless, some civilians have "begun to try to solve the problem with their own hands.".
