According to the official WeChat article of Chongqing University mentioned above, from September 2003 to July 2009, Guo Xiao'an studied Political Science Theory at Wuhan University under Professor Yu Chongsheng. During his doctoral studies, Guo Xiao'an developed a strong interest in the relationship between media and democracy. After communicating with his supervisor, he decided on the topic of his doctoral thesis, "The Possibility and Limitations of Online Democracy: From the Perspective of the Relationship between Media and Democracy.". This paper later won the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award in Hubei Province in 2010 and was published by China Social Science Press in 2011.
In 2009, Guo Xiao'an entered Huazhong University of Science and Technology to work. With a keen academic sense, Guo Xiao'an found through reading a vast amount of literature that although there was more attention paid to online rumors in China at that time, the research perspective was limited to the fields of communication and management, and focused on the study of communication laws and management measures, lacking attention to research topics such as rumors and political participation, political expression, political supervision, and even political protests from the perspective of political psychology.
"When planning to apply for the National Social Science Fund, I attempted to use online rumors as a research exploration and breakthrough direction. Fortunately, my first application was successful," Guo Xiaoan said.
After the project was approved, Guo Xiao'an devoted himself to the social psychology, emotional mobilization mechanism, rumor analysis and governance of rumors, and published more than 10 preliminary achievements in publications such as International News and Modern Communication. After revision, he was published in China Social Science Press and won the 9th Chongqing Social Science Excellent Achievement Award.
In July 2013, Guo Xiao'an received an olive branch thrown by Dean Dong Tiance of the School of Journalism at Chongqing University. From then on, Guo Xiao'an entered the School of Journalism at Chongqing University as a scholar.
Since 2016, Guo Xiao'an has founded the Xiao'an Reading Club, which holds a monthly salon. The content is divided into "Introduction to Classic Literature in Public Opinion" and "Academic Frontier Tracking and Discussion in Public Opinion". He introduced that the main purpose of reading classics is to consolidate students' professional foundation and broaden their academic horizons; Academic frontier tracking and discussion is the process of generating inspiration and finding research directions through the collision of ideas.
