Recently, staff at the Taizishan National Nature Reserve in Gansu Province used a video surveillance system to remotely detect footage of a pair of snow chickens being protected as a second level national animal. In the camera, a pair of Tibetan snow chickens shuttle between the bare rocks and alpine cypress shrubs in search of food. Tibetan snow chicken is a second level protected animal in China, belonging to the family Pheasants in the order Cociformes. It is the highest vertically distributed bird species and generally inhabits high mountain shrubs, tundra, and bare rock areas between the forest line and the snow line at an altitude of 3000 to 6000 meters.
As a means of protecting animals, wild boars have recently been included in the list of terrestrial wildlife with significant ecological, scientific, and social value. Experts say that the wild boar species no longer poses a threat to survival, and the population in many areas is too high, which is in line with the basic principles of adjustment. Of course, removing wild boars from the list does not mean they can be freely hunted and killed. After the wild boar is removed from the list, the process of hunting activities is more convenient, but the principle of prioritizing protection still needs to be adhered to, and relevant laws and regulations must be strictly followed.
Whether it's the "painting" of the Tibetan snow chicken or the "delisting" of the wild boar, or the Yangtze finless porpoise chasing and jumping in the Yangtze River, or the wild giant panda strolling on the Huangbaiyuan Highway, their fate is a microcosm of the changes in our country's natural ecological environment and the relationship between humans and nature in recent years. With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection by the country and the increasing awareness of environmental protection among the public, the protection of wildlife in China has shown a good trend. The wild populations of some endangered species have been restored to a certain extent, and some species no longer pose a threat to their survival.
Respecting nature, cherishing the earth, establishing the concept of green, low-carbon, and sustainable development, respecting, conforming to, and protecting the natural ecology, can we leave behind blue skies, blue seas, and green mountains and clear waters for our future generations. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, we have been vigorously promoting ecological protection, and many places have also explored practical and effective practices in practice, which have been widely recognized by the international community. In 2022, "China Landscape Engineering" was awarded the first batch of the top ten "World Ecological Restoration Flagship Projects" by the United Nations, and was evaluated as one of the most promising, ambitious, and inspiring large-scale ecological restoration examples in the world. According to NASA satellite data, between 2000 and 2017, about a quarter of the world's newly added green areas came from China.
The construction of ecological civilization is not only the past, but also the ongoing and future. According to the news from the "Authoritative Departmental Opening" series of themed news from the State Council Information Office, we will continue to deepen the implementation of the integrated protection and restoration project of mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands, and sands. It is expected that by the end of the 14th Five Year Plan, we will complete the ecological protection and restoration of more than 30 million mu. The goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 will ultimately be achieved through the conscious actions of the entire nation.
The environment is people's livelihood, the green mountains are beauty, and the blue sky is happiness. Throughout the history of world development, protecting the ecological environment is protecting productivity, and improving the ecological environment is developing productivity. A good ecological environment is the most equitable public good and the most inclusive welfare for people's livelihoods. But the restoration and improvement of the ecological environment is a process that requires long-term and arduous efforts. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, the construction of ecological civilization has entered a critical period with carbon reduction as the key strategic direction, promoting coordinated efficiency in pollution reduction and carbon reduction, promoting comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development, and achieving the improvement of ecological environment quality from quantitative to qualitative. On the new journey of catching up with exams, answering the essential question of ecological civilization construction well is not only everyone's responsibility, but also everyone's benefit.
