Going to the grassroots and the places where our country needs the most has become a firm choice for batches of college graduates. Wu Jianan is one of the young people who rooted themselves in the grassroots and devoted their youth to the country.
Wu Jianan graduated from North China Electric Power University with a major in Electrical Engineering and Automation in 2013. Over the past decade, she has been rooted in the forefront of the plateau power grid, guarding the lights of every household. I am now a substation operation and maintenance technical engineer at the Xining Operation and Maintenance Division of State Grid Qinghai Ultra High Voltage Company, responsible for the operation and maintenance of 20 substations around Xining.
At the Riyueshan 750 kV substation of State Grid Qinghai Ultra High Voltage Company, Wu Jianan and colleagues are conducting daily inspections. Riyueshan 750 kV substation is not only one of the large hub substations of the Northwest Power Grid, but also the starting point of the Xizang AC/DC interconnection project, which is responsible for the interconnection of Xizang and Qinghai provinces and the supply of power to important loads in Xining Industrial Park. In order to ensure the safe operation of the substation, Wu Jianan and his colleagues need to complete more than 100 operation and maintenance projects of various sizes.
In 2013, after graduating from North China Electric Power University, Wu Jianan left his hometown in Hebei and came to Yushu, Qinghai with full enthusiasm for building the western region and aspirations for his career. However, the average altitude here exceeds 4000 meters, giving her a sense of awe as a newcomer.
Wu Jianan: When I was in school, I had always admired the beautiful scenery of "seeing cows and sheep in the grass blowing low in the wind". It happened that when I graduated, the school called for "going to the most needed place in our country". Actually, there was a bit of opposition at home at that time, mainly because my mother was very worried about me, but in the end, I decided to come here. After coming here, I found that Qinghai not only has beautiful scenery, but also has high altitude sickness. Lack of oxygen is really uncomfortable, and even taking stairs and brisk walks can make you gasp for breath.
Compared to physical discomfort, Wu Jianan also faces challenges at work. After truly entering the substation to work, Wu Jianan deeply felt the huge gap between theoretical knowledge and practical operation. She faced a wide variety of equipment and tens of thousands of different signals in the background. She needed to verify and handle relevant abnormalities with colleagues in a timely manner. Faced with a huge workload and workload, Wu Jianan couldn't help but feel flustered at first, but he didn't give up. In order to adapt and familiarize herself with the work as soon as possible, she and her colleagues took turns on duty at night and stayed in the factory area 24 hours a day.
Wu Jianan: Just in time for the first inspection of Yushu 330kV substation. During the day, I would follow the masters to lie on the maintenance site, and at night, I would work overtime to learn the rules and regulations in front of the background monitoring machine. The basic skills must be mastered solidly as soon as possible. There are no other shortcuts, only practice more, use more pens, and write more. After more than a month of initial inspection work, I feel that I have also grown.
Over the past 10 years, Wu Jianan has been actively involved in the acceptance and operation of 13 substations. Through repeated on-site trials, she gained a thorough understanding of the "habits" and "likes and dislikes" of power grid equipment, and grew into a versatile talent in both technology and management. In 2020, Wu Jianan, who was only 29 years old, stood out in the job competition and served as the station manager of the Xining 750 kV substation, taking on the "big beam" of overall station management. She also became the youngest and only female station manager among the 750 kV substation managers under the jurisdiction of Qinghai Province at that time. She also led the team to continuously optimize the professional operation and workflow of substation operation and maintenance through technological innovation, improve management quality, and won the first prize of the company's quality control achievement for two consecutive years.
Ma Zhanrui, the on duty supervisor of the 750 kV Xining Substation of State Grid Qinghai Ultra High Voltage Company: In the past few years of working with Jia Nanjie, I have found that she can count every substation she has been on duty at. The most impressive experience was in 2017 when we conducted a special equipment inspection at Tara Substation. Fortunately, she discovered a leakage sound on the 750 kV busbar. Due to timely and accurate detection of abnormalities, it was possible to avoid the expansion of the fault range and secondary damage to the equipment.
Wu Jianan, who is devoted to guarding the lights of every household, has now settled her small home in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, and her husband is also a power grid worker. Her mother, who once opposed her moving away from her hometown, came specifically from her hometown to help her take care of her children, becoming her most steadfast supporter.
Wu Jianan's mother, Wang Yuefen: My daughter has been working in Qinghai for ten years. As parents, we feel particularly pleased to see our children putting their energy into the areas needed by our country, having their own careers, and establishing their own small family. The children are usually busy with work, so we can help them a little and let them work with peace of mind without any worries.
Nowadays, Wu Jianan is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 20 substations around Xining. Her love for learning, research, and proactive actions have also driven the entire team. Faced with many young people who choose to dedicate themselves to the plateau, she teaches hand in hand, turning major maintenance and operation sites into a platform for everyone to learn and grow. She hopes to closely follow the pace of power grid development and transformation with these young people, constantly update business knowledge, protect the safety of the power grid, and safeguard the lights of every household.
