Global Connection | Chinese Hong Kong Archaeologists Jointly Uncover the Copan Maya Cultural Relics in Honduras | Sites | Copan, Honduras
In the dense forests of the northwestern Central American country of Honduras, there is a hidden Mayan civilization site - the ancient city of Copan. Since the Copan Maya site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, international cooperation has become the main means of local archaeology.
In 2015, Li Xinwei and Ramos, the leaders of the China and Honduras joint archaeological team of the "Kopan Site Archaeology and Central American Civilization Research of the Maya Civilization Center" project at the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, led the China Hong Joint Archaeological Team and began working on the exhibition of the aristocratic courtyard site numbered 8N-11.

Since the launch of the joint archaeological project, exquisite pottery, jade artifacts, and carvings have shaken off thousands of years of dust, and have been rediscovered in the hands of archaeologists from China and Hong Kong. In the center of the exhibition hall at the entrance of Copan Site, there is an exquisite dragon head statue. The high round nose and curly mouth dragon whiskers look just like the Chinese Loong. The name of this pair of Zhonghong archeological partners is written on the introduction board beside the statue.
On March 26th, the governments of China and Honduras signed a communiqu é on the establishment of diplomatic relations. In the view of archaeologists from China and Hong Kong, the two countries have ushered in a new chapter in cooperation in heritage protection.
