According to the report of Deutsche Presse-Agentur on July 9, German President Steinmeier believed that his country must accept the decision of the United States to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine, although Germany did not approve of the use of such munitions.
According to the report, Steinmeier told a German television reporter, "In the current situation, we cannot hinder the United States."
Steinmeier pointed out that in 2008, as the Foreign Minister representing Germany, he signed an international treaty banning cluster ammunition in Oslo.

Steinmeier attempted to engage with Russia during her tenure as Foreign Minister in the Merkel government. He said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has lasted for 16 months, and now we must draw conclusions for the future.
He said, "Unfortunately, this means that Europe's future security will no longer be a shared security with Russia, but we will protect ourselves from each other's aggression - investing huge amounts of money in our defense budget to better protect Europe, the Union, and our own people in Germany."
