Fully restore the scheduled start of school
At around 8 o'clock in the morning of August 31st, accompanied by the majestic national anthem, the Five Star Red Flag slowly rose at Diaowo Middle School in Zhuozhou City, Hebei Province.
"My classmates are all looking forward to the start of school. Today's flag raising ceremony is also a hope in our hearts," said Wang Zimeng, the host of the flag raising ceremony and a student from Class 92.
During this extreme rainfall, Zhuozhou City was one of the hardest hit areas in Hebei Province.
On July 30th, Diaowo Middle School became a temporary resettlement site, accommodating a total of 232 people, including those affected by the disaster. On the afternoon of July 31st, floods hit the campus, causing the school to shut down water and electricity. On the afternoon of August 2nd, the disaster victims who were resettled here were once again relocated to safer areas. During this period, Principal Sun Jianjian and five other faculty members have been steadfastly adhering to the school. The deepest water in the school is nearly 2 meters, and all the classrooms and offices on the first floor are flooded. The desks and chairs are washed upside down. After the flood receded, the average thickness of silt in the campus was 5 centimeters
To ensure the timely start of school, teachers, parents of students, and caring individuals work together to drain and clean up the mud, gradually restoring the campus to normal.
Party member teachers rushed ahead: newly hired Li Yanjie rushed back from another city to provide disaster relief; Lu Hongying is about to retire next year and her family is also affected by the disaster, but she still chooses to clean up the campus first; Yang Shuliang uses his new tricycle to transport mud. More than 300 parents and kind-hearted people have voluntarily come to help.
Many students also spontaneously return to school and engage in flood control and dredging work. Wang Mingyang, a student from Class 93, helped clean up the mud for three or four days. "So many people have come to help, I hope I can also do my part," he said
"It is precisely because of everyone's joint efforts that the school can start on time," said Sun Jianming.
The road next to Diaowo Middle School has also been given a new name - Zhumeng Road, aimed at inspiring students to work hard and achieve their dreams. The display columns on both sides of the road tell the story of the school's flood relief, restoration and reconstruction.
On August 31st, a total of 410 students from the second and third grades of Diaowo Middle School returned to school. On September 1st, the school will also welcome 180 first-year students.
"We started carrying out dredging and disinfection, house appraisal, and facility repair work on all schools in the city from August 5th. It was completed on August 29th and can be used normally," said Song Liang, a member of the Party Committee of the Education and Sports Bureau of Zhuozhou City. "On August 31st and September 1st, more than 130000 teachers and students from all types of schools in the city started school as scheduled."
