Deep in the Qinling Mountains, on a green field in Yingpan Village, Liuhou Town, Liuba County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province, two groups of young football players wearing down vests braved light rain to practice and compete. Standing on the sidelines is not the coach, but Ma Jun, the first secretary stationed in the village and captain of the work team. He was dispatched from the Sports Bureau of Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province and has a good understanding of football techniques and tactics. After arriving at Yingpan Village, Ma Jun's "tactical board" was also filled with densely packed rural revitalization methods.

Three lines aligned, fully attacking and defending

"Yingpan Village, I'm familiar with it!" In August 2021, Ma Jun, who was busy preparing for the competition, received a notice to stay in the village.

Yingpan Village has high mountains and long roads, and its unique geographical and climatic conditions endow it with superior tourism and sports resources. The first mountain skiing resort in southern Shaanxi was built in the village. Ma Jun has organized mass competitions such as skiing, snow tug of war, and snow football here.

Because he is not unfamiliar with camping sites, Ma Jun is well aware of the reality that the villagers are "guarding their golden rice bowls and begging for food": "The ski resort is crowded with tourists every winter, but they leave after playing for half a day."

How to keep people? After a long conversation with village officials and conducting research throughout the village, Ma Jun came up with a football tactical term: "The three lines should be neat, and even a village without one can't get up." "The three lines" refer to the three lines of infrastructure, reception facilities, and entertainment facilities in the village.

The construction of a highway that crosses the river and tunnels will solve the biggest bottleneck in the development of Yingpan; The village needs water channels, power towers, and base stations, and Ma Jun coordinates with relevant departments to supplement and improve them as soon as possible; Utilizing mountain resources to expand leisure activities from skiing to off-road motorcycles, horse riding, archery, and a series of cultural, sports, and tourism integration for research, learning, and team building

"Nowadays, tourists come, stay, and play well. Last year, the village's collective economy reached over 2.6 million yuan," said Ma Jun.

Man to man, heart to heart

The tourism projects in Yingpan are constantly expanding, but homestays are operating slowly. Last spring, Ma Jun followed the town and village officials to visit each household and said, "We answer questions and provide guidance to each household based on their specific needs. Over the past year, rows of homestays on the main street have been opened, and this year we will add about 10 more." Even before this year's peak tourism season, Ma Jun invited staff from the Liuba County Cultural and Tourism Bureau to introduce preferential policies for the construction and operation of homestays to the villagers.

Ma Jun Visits Villagers

Many development opportunities in the village were also discovered by Ma Jun while assisting the village committee in actively resolving conflicts and disputes. Tasting a pear on the tree behind the village house made Ma Jun think of developing the fruit industry because the fruit picking season here is later. In response to the excessive consumption of soil fertility caused by the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine in the village, they negotiated with merchants to promote the off-season cultivation technology of morel mushrooms, which does not require high soil quality.

One project after another yields fruitful results, but the communication process is often painstaking. However, what pleased Ma Jun was that the village's business has become more diverse, the economy has become more active, and people's hearts have become more stable. Xie Qingchun, Secretary of the Yingpan Village Branch and Village Director, said, "In the past, almost every family in Yingpan went out to work. Now, there are only over 30 people who go out to work, and it has also attracted many neighboring villagers to work here."

Seize every minute

"There is a football match in the city on the weekend, so prepare all the guest rooms in advance." Walking on the village road that has been washed away by rainwater, Ma Jun leaned into the homestay and smiled, instructing the villagers.

"This year, we will hold three major competitions just for the football project. The peak tourism season is coming, and new projects will also be launched." Ma Jun said that the sports park and children's playground in the village will be put into use in June, and the parking lot, charging station, and gas station are also about to be built. "By then, living in the village will be similar to living in a mountain town."

Yingpan Village was electrified in 1999 and has now become a well-known star village. This also made Ma Jun realize the value of seizing every minute: "Just like sports, any moment can change the outcome of a game."

Since 2022, Yingpan has been rated as a provincial-level characteristic town in Shaanxi and the fourth batch of national key rural tourism villages. In Ma Jun's view, there is great potential for the future development of Yingpan Village. He is working with the village to launch more sports and tourism integration products, as well as "local specialties" and "cultural and creative products", to extend the peak season and strive to make villagers earn money all year round and allow tourists to play throughout the year.

Sleepless nights, long conversations, village affairs, and all the branches and leaves are closely related. After winning the trust and love of villagers and turning small projects into big industries that help farmers broaden their horizons and increase their income, Ma Jun's tenure in the village has also come to an end. "To truly start working, two years have flown by like flying," Ma Jun said. "Now there are good 'players' and good' coaches' in Yingpan Village, and they will definitely win the gold medal for comprehensive rural revitalization in the future!"
