French Foreign Minister: Macron is interested in attending the BRICS Summit
According to Agence France Presse on the 20th, the French Foreign Minister said on the 20th that French President Macron hopes to attend the BRICS summit scheduled for August. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to attend this summit.
French Foreign Minister Catherine Cologne said she has informed the summit host South Africa that Macron is "interested" in attending the BRICS summit as an observer. The BRICS countries are composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
"I have informed the South African Foreign Minister that the President has the time and willingness to seek continued dialogue with the BRICS countries," Cologne said in response to a reporter's question
It is not common for non member country leaders to attend the BRICS summit.
South African Foreign Minister Nalandi Pandor stated on the 19th that Macron's attendance at the BRICS summit "would be an innovation in the form of participation of BRICS mechanisms so far, if successful.". She also said that who can be invited to attend the summit will be decided by the President of South Africa, the rotating presidency of the BRICS countries.
