Foreign media: UK appoints new ambassador to Russia | UK | Ambassador
According to Agence France Presse, the UK Foreign Office announced on August 2nd the appointment of Nigel Casey as the new ambassador to Russia. Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, tensions between Moscow and London have intensified.
According to reports, Casey will replace Deborah Bronnet, who has been in this position since 2020, and will take office in November.
Casey, currently 54 years old, is a professional diplomat who joined the UK Foreign Office in 1991. His most recent position was as the UK Prime Minister's Special Representative for Afghanistan. He also served as the British High Commissioner to South Africa and as the Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The report also mentioned that from 2003 to 2006, Casey was stationed in Moscow.
According to reports, Moscow announced travel restrictions on British diplomats working in Russia last month, which is the latest sign of deteriorating relations between the two countries. With a few exceptions, these diplomats will need to inform the authorities in advance of their actions in various parts of Russia and elaborate on their planned itinerary.
Moscow stated that these measures are aimed at responding to London's "hostile actions", such as "obstructing the normal operation of Russian diplomatic missions in the UK".
