According to the Dhaka Forum on the 19th, Bangladesh has officially applied to join the BRICS Cooperation Mechanism.
According to the report, the application was submitted by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina after a meeting with South African President Ramaphosa in Geneva last Wednesday. Sources have revealed that the South African President actively responded to this issue during talks with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
The report also stated that Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Mohman has issued formal letters of intent to the BRICS presidency and South African Foreign Minister Pandor regarding this matter. When asked about this matter, Momen confirmed, "Yes, we have expressed interest and applied to join this cooperation mechanism.".
The report mentions that the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa in August this year may include discussions on new membership. According to previous reports, the BRICS summit is scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 22nd to 24th.
As a mechanism and platform advocating multilateralism and cooperation, the BRICS countries are attracting more and more attention and willingness to join. South Africa stated in April that 19 countries have expressed interest in joining the BRICS countries through formal or informal channels. Starting from 2021, the New Development Bank of the BRICS countries will take the lead in expanding its membership. As of now, there are a total of 8 official member countries of the New Development Bank, including the BRICS five countries, as well as Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, as well as the potential member country Uruguay. During his visit to China this month, President Castro of Honduras officially submitted his country's application to join the New Development Bank. In addition, Saudi Arabia is in talks about entering the industry.
