On June 13th local time, Mexican President Lopez announced that she will temporarily reside in the 28th Infantry Camp located in the southern part of the city for the safety of Cavallero after being threatened by criminal gangs.
Cavallero said that since she took office as mayor, Tijuana police have seized 1700 firearms from criminal gangs and detained 56 criminals, and since then she has been under threat.
Nearly a month ago, a vehicle carrying a bodyguard from Cavallero was shot, and the bodyguard almost died. On June 12th, local police found seven bodies in a pickup truck while inspecting a gas station.

Cavallero said that the Mexican National Guard suggested that she move to a military camp.
Cavallero admitted that she was very scared and worried about her own safety. She said moving to the military camp was a "sacrifice", "I have a family and a child, but I also have a responsibility to this city."
Lopez also stated that since about two weeks ago, Cavallero has been under military protection and her protection will continue.
