For the first time in over 40 years! Tens of thousands of city workers in Los Angeles will go on strike, affecting representatives from multiple industries | unions | impact
More than 11000 Los Angeles city workers plan to hold a large-scale strike on the 8th local time, which is expected to last 24 hours, according to union representatives in California, CNN reported on the 7th. At that time, the city's sanitation services, port transportation, airport operations and other aspects of work will be affected.
According to reports, a local union representative confirmed that city government employees represented by the "Service Employees International Union 172nd Local Branch", a union organization of 95000 county and city municipal workers in Southern California, including sanitation departments, city ports and Los Angeles International Employees working at the airport will strike for 24 hours on the 8th local time and will go to City Hall and Los Angeles International Airport for a collective protest.
"Every employee in our city is a frontline public sector worker, providing services to the public every day," said David Green, Chairman of SEIULocal721. "But many things have not been noticed. On the 8th, we will ensure that every worker can be noticed by everyone."
It is reported that the workers specifically involved in the strike will mainly be garbage truck drivers, Los Angeles International Airport shuttle bus drivers, mechanics, and port vessel crew. Therefore, on the 8th, all sea, land, air transportation, and urban sanitation maintenance in Los Angeles will be unable to operate normally.
The Los Angeles labor union and municipal authorities currently have their own opinions. SEIULocal721 stated that union members voted to approve the strike after the Los Angeles municipal administration repeatedly violated labor laws.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the city has been sincerely negotiating with unions. "The daily service of urban workers to millions of Los Angeles people is crucial. They deserve fair contracts, and since January 2023, we have been in sincere negotiations with SEIU721 and have always hoped to make progress." Bass said.
The report states that this strike is the first strike by Los Angeles city workers in over 40 years.
