For the first time in modern history! American bombers landed in Sweden. Bombers | Sweden | United States
According to a report by Agence France Presse in Stockholm, the Swedish military said on the 21st that during a training exercise with NATO invited by Sweden, American bombers landed in the country for the first time in modern history.
Sweden abandoned its two century long military non alignment policy last year and sought to join NATO. It announced earlier this month that it is ready to receive NATO troops and supplies on its own territory before becoming a member of NATO.
According to reports, the Swedish military said that two US B-1B bombers landed at an air force base in northern Sweden on June 19th.
Swedish Air Force spokesperson Louis Levin said, "We are conducting joint air force and army exercises with bomber task forces."
She did not mention how long the exercise would last.
The military stated in a statement that "American bombers have landed in Sweden for the first time since modern times.". The statement said, "In this period of uncertainty, it is crucial to have strong partners while waiting to join NATO."
Sweden is applying to join NATO, but its "accession" application - which must be approved by all NATO members - has been blocked by Türkiye and Hungary.
According to previous reports from Reuters, Swedish Defense Minister Pol Ronson said on the 19th that Sweden is "very determined" to join NATO no later than mid July at the Vilnius summit.
Rong Song said, "We are very determined to become a full member of NATO as soon as possible, no later than the Vilnius Summit. This is our goal."
