CCTV News: On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, a dragon boat race was held in Zibu Town, Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province. The Dragon Boat Festival is the first festival in China to be selected as a world intangible cultural heritage. As a traditional folk custom of the Dragon Boat Festival, dragon boat racing embodies the spirit of unity, cooperation, and courage of the Chinese nation, and is also our precious cultural heritage. Zibu Town has a long history of dragon boat racing and making. In order to welcome the Dragon Boat Festival, many days ago, the people here had already started to be busy.
Before the Dragon Boat Festival arrived, the rivers of all sizes in Zibu Town became lively. I haven't competed in dragon boat races for three years. This year, several nearby towns will hold a friendly competition, and each dragon boat team is holding back their enthusiasm to perform well.
On this day, five dragon boat teams from Lihu Village, Shanhe Village, and other places made plans to come to Huayuan Reservoir for training and warm-up matches. Although it is just a folk activity, everyone's enthusiasm for participation is very high.

As one of the most distinctive folk activities of the Dragon Boat Festival, dragon boat racing was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011. Zibu Town is a famous dragon boat making town in the northeast region of Jiangxi Province. Not only does it have a long history of dragon boat racing, but the ancient dragon boat making techniques have also been passed down here for hundreds of years.
Li Yongchuan, President of the Dragon Boat Association in Zibu Town, Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, said, "Our dragon boat competition in Zibu Town has a history of over 600 years. The people attach great importance to this activity and organize dragon boat races every year during the Dragon Boat Festival. Now, we have also developed the dragon boat industry, with over 60 companies producing dragon boats."
The person who is directing everyone to load the dragon boat onto the truck is called Li Guangding, who is the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of dragon boat making skills in Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province. At the age of 66, he has been engaged in dragon boat making for 49 years.

On this day, another new dragon boat was completed and they were planning to take it to the river to test the water.
After trying the water, Old Li hurried back to the factory. This year's orders are booming, and there are still many dragon boats waiting in line to catch up.
Whether a dragon boat runs fast or not depends on its ridge. A dragon boat ordered by a Fujian merchant is currently in the most critical stage of ridge production. Old Li is not confident in handing over this process to others, he always has to personally handle it.

Building a dragon boat is a delicate process that involves more than 20 steps, including joining dragon bones, attaching dragon arrows, and drawing dragons. The entire production process is mostly done by hand. Among them, the curvature and dimensions of some key points must be accurately calculated.
After drawing the bottom line, Lao Li will also proofread it, and if there are any problems, he will make separate corrections, mainly relying on his eyesight and experience. For hundreds of years, the craftsmanship of dragon boat making in Zibu Town has been passed down from generation to generation, mostly taught by masters to apprentices, who use their brains to memorize and then practice with their hands. Old Li not only received many apprentices, but also passed on his skills and experience to his son.
In recent years, the father and son of Lao Li have continuously improved the dragon boat making process and developed 8 types of dragon boat styles. The style with a raised stern is called a dovetail, which is a new product developed by them based on customer needs and changes in production technology.

Due to factors such as the epidemic, dragon boat racing activities were suspended a few years ago, and the number of people buying dragon boats naturally decreased. On average, Li only accepts one or two orders per year, but he doesn't have much concern in his heart.
Sure enough, since the second lunar month, dragon boat orders have been pouring in continuously, and Lao Li has received more than 70 orders one after another. Due to a shortage of manpower, in order to ensure quality, he stopped accepting orders during the May Day holiday. The factory worked overtime every day, but sometimes delays were inevitable. On the day the reporter filmed, he met a customer who came to remind him of the payment.
This year, most of the dragon boat manufacturers in Zibu Town are in a state of explosive sales.

Yu Xiaopao from Yujia Village, Yuntang, Yingtan City came to order this year's May Day holiday. What he didn't expect was that despite being advanced so long, ordering the dragon boat didn't go smoothly. The goods couldn't be ordered, and no one did the ordering.
In the end, Yu Xiaopao found three different manufacturers and finally gathered the three dragon boats he wanted. However, Zhang Senhai from Yugan County, who arrived even later, found that he could no longer find a manufacturer to accept their new orders.
Although I bought a stock dragon boat that was made in 2020, the style and quality were not a problem. Zhang Senhai and his fellow townsmen were very happy. In their hometown, dragon boat racing during the Dragon Boat Festival has always been a cultural tradition that people attach great importance to.

The difficulty of finding a boat has led to a rapid recovery in the dragon boat making industry in Zibu Town. Some old boatmen who had previously sought alternative opportunities due to industry shrinkage have also returned, and Zhang Xiangjin is one of them. A few years ago, he went to work at a furniture factory in another city. After returning to his old business this year, orders had already been fully booked more than a month ago. He invited several workers to help and also took in new apprentices.
The hot dragon boat market has attracted many young people to come and learn. 28 year old Zhang Wei used to be a truck driver. This year, he studied under Zhang Xiangjin and is determined to learn this craft well.
The protection and inheritance of excellent traditional Chinese culture cannot be separated from the word "innovation". Nowadays, the concept of dragon boat making often collides between new and old boat craftsmen.

The two people who are exploring new techniques for making dragon boats are father and son. Father Hu Shenglin is nearly 70 years old and has been dealing with dragon boats for most of his life. Son Hu Yongming is the fourth generation boatman of their dragon boat family. However, in earlier years, Hu Yongming did not want to work in this industry and felt that it was too hard.
However, after being persuaded by his father to enter this industry, Hu Yongming gradually fell in love with this craft and really wanted to make a name for himself. Unlike his father's constant pursuit of stability, he enjoys studying various ships both domestically and internationally, hoping to gain some inspiration and continuously improve the bow angle and bottom curvature of the dragon boat to make it travel faster and more steadily.
When he has a new idea, Hu Yongming will seek help from his daughter who is currently studying in college, asking her to help calculate various data on the computer and verify security.

After generations of protection and inheritance, dragon boat making has become a characteristic industry in Zibu Town, with an output value exceeding 20 million yuan this year. At present, Zibu Town is planning to build a dragon boat cultural industry park that integrates design, research and development, production, sales, and service, further developing and strengthening its characteristic industries.
