European media article: The long-term double standard reputation of the United States is seriously declining. Lenan Institute for International Studies | Polytechnic University | United States
On June 30th, the European magazine Modern Diplomacy published an article titled "The United States lacks credibility" by James M. Dorsey, Senior Researcher at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The article states that the United States and the West have long implemented double standards on major international issues, which has led to a serious decline in the credibility of the United States.
The article introduces that a recent Arab poll shows that the credibility of the United States is seriously declining, and the United States has been praised by Middle Eastern people for adhering to "double standards". For a long time, there have been differences between US policies and publicly proclaimed values. Former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Dino Pati Jalal, believes that dissatisfaction with Western countries is more widespread in southern countries around the world, which exacerbates doubts about the credibility of the United States in the international community. "People believe that the West adheres to double standards on issues such as climate action and responsibility, trade, and accountability for human rights violations. Western countries advocate for free trade, but increasingly adopt trade protectionism."
The article states that the increasingly polarized domestic politics have solidified the "dual standard" image of the United States in its sense of responsibility. Improving credibility could have been simple for Western countries, such as ending the violations of the basic rights and freedoms of prisoners at Guantanamo Prison, and fulfilling commitments to provide $100 billion in climate financing to developing countries. But the US leadership seems to have not realized the importance of credibility in today's world, and the expectations of the outside world for the US to take responsibility are at best wishful thinking.
