EU: Preparing to Implement "Personal Sanctions" on Niger Humanitarian | Niger | EU
According to TASS on August 12th, the EU's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borelli, issued a statement in Brussels stating that the EU is ready to impose personal sanctions on Niger to support the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States to "restore democracy" in the country. He emphasized that while preparing for the Western Community's military intervention in Niger, the EU also supports the search for a peaceful solution.
In a statement, Borelli said, "While taking note of the mobilization of the standing forces of the Western Community, the EU strongly calls for the restoration of constitutional order, confirms its full support for elected President Bazum, welcomes the decision adopted by the leaders of the Western Community countries at the second emergency summit on August 10 to discuss the situation in Niger, and particularly welcomes the desire to find diplomatic ways out of the current crisis."
Borrelli said, "The EU fully supports the efforts made by the Western Community and is prepared to contribute to its implementation by implementing a new individual sanctions mechanism."
He also stated that the EU will "continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Niger and continue to stand by the people of the country.". Previously, EU diplomatic agencies stated that although European citizens have withdrawn from Niger, multiple working groups of some EU agencies remain in the country to provide humanitarian assistance to their residents.
