Integrated monitoring of wild giant pandas through "sky, sky, and earth". Census does not rely on "number", but on "calculation" of giant pandas | Camera | Census
CCTV News: As July approaches, the Baishuijiang area of the Giant Panda National Park in Gansu Province has begun the maintenance and image retrieval of infrared cameras in the second quarter, and the patrol and monitoring of giant pandas have also begun simultaneously. How did the number of giant pandas in national parks come about? How is it patrolled and monitored? Watch the reporter's report.
CCTV reporter Jiao Jian: According to the data from the fourth national statistical survey of giant pandas, there are 111 wild giant pandas living here. How did this number come from? Everyone can take a look. The piece in my hand is the feces of the giant panda, which was discovered by the staff here while patrolling the mountain.
In the census of giant pandas, the most commonly used method is called the biting method, which can also be seen from this piece of feces that it is the bamboo that has been bitten by the giant panda. Panda bite joints have different lengths, for example, a length of about three centimeters should be a juvenile giant panda, while a length between 3 centimeters and 6 centimeters may be an adult giant panda. Our staff can determine whether the feces of the giant panda were excreted by the same panda by measuring the different lengths of the bite and the different widths of the serrations. So we say that the numbers obtained by giant pandas in the census are not actually calculated one by one, but rather calculated. In recent years, the Baishuijiang area has also built 14 sets of outdoor giant panda spatial monitoring video systems, and deployed more than 1000 infrared cameras in the wild. Considering the possibility of human activities, some fixed probes and cameras have also been installed locally. In the words of the staff here, they have now built a seamless and integrated "sky and earth" monitoring system.
