During her visit to China, she proposed that Honduras apply to join the BRICS New Development Bank for development | Honduras | Country
According to Reuters, on the evening of June 9th, the office of Honduras President Castro tweeted that during a meeting with Dilma Rousseff, the President of the New Development Bank of the BRICS, Castro had officially applied for Honduras to join the institution.
Castro is currently on a six day visit to China.
The New Development Bank, headquartered in Shanghai, is a multilateral development bank jointly established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa in 2015. Its aim is to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies such as the BRICS and developing countries, and to contribute to global growth and development as a multilateral and regional financial institution.
In 2021, the New Development Bank launched an expansion to include Bangladesh, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Uruguay as new member countries.
Several foreign media previously reported that Honduras President Castro arrived in Shanghai on the 9th and embarked on a six day visit to China. This visit is considered to mark a new step in Honduras' diplomatic relations with China.
Honduras's Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of foreign policy, Heraldo Torres Seraya, said that during President Castro's visit to China, there will be diplomatic level meetings, as well as meetings related to specific areas, such as energy production, support for large-scale infrastructure projects, trade openness, and academic scientific scholarship programs.
Torres Seraya stated that this visit will bring a series of benefits to Honduras, such as attracting investment, creating a large number of job opportunities, and promoting the country's industrial development.
