Does Fukushima nuclear wastewater exceed 20000 times the standard? South Korea says no to Japan! Value | Nuclear wastewater | Fukushima
On June 16, China News Agency reported that even after being treated, the pollution value of Fukushima nuclear wastewater still exceeded 20000 times. The multi nuclide treatment system of the Fukushima nuclear power plant has malfunctioned as many as 8 times. On June 15 and 16, the South Korean government issued consecutive investigation conclusions to criticize Japan for planning to officially discharge Fukushima nuclear wastewater into the sea in the near future.
Nuclear wastewater treatment is also unsafe
Pollution value exceeds 20000 times the standard
On the 15th, the first head of the South Korean State Adjustment Office, Park Geun ran, stated that the South Korean side will closely monitor the issue of nuclear wastewater discharge from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, and will release daily safety testing information on nuclear wastewater discharge into the sea starting from today.
In response to previous reports that "even after treatment, the pollution value of Fukushima nuclear wastewater still exceeds 20000 times", Park Puk ran stated that the report is true. He added that according to South Korean standards, the detection level of radioactive substance strontium in Fukushima nuclear wastewater exceeds 216500 times, and even according to Japanese standards, it exceeds nearly 15000 times.
Not only that, at the press conference on the 16th, Park Kong ran further revealed that the South Korean government's Fukushima nuclear wastewater treatment facility inspection team learned during a field visit to Japan in May that the multi nuclide treatment system of the Fukushima nuclear power plant had experienced a total of 8 failures between 2013 and 2022, including equipment corrosion and equipment filter failures.
At present, the South Korean working group is analyzing relevant information and will confirm whether the multi nuclide processing system can operate for a long time.
Fukushima's catch of radioactive substances severely exceeds the standard
South Korea: If it's not safe, don't import it
After the above news was announced, it has further raised concerns among the South Korean people, especially in the area of seafood that has been particularly affected.
According to Japanese media reports, recently caught groupers in the waters off Fukushima have been detected to contain radioactive cesium 180 times the standard value!
This means that not only importing seafood from Japan will bring extremely high risks, but Korean fishermen will also lose a safe fishing environment.
In recent days, fishermen in many parts of South Korea have been protesting against the discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea, urging the South Korean government to actively protect the rights and interests of South Korean fishermen.
Faced with fierce opposition, South Korean Deputy Minister of Marine Products, Song Sang gen, stated on the 16th that if the safety of Fukushima seafood cannot be proven, the import ban will not be lifted, and emphasized that lifting the ban on seafood imports does not depend on the safety of nuclear wastewater, but on the safety of seafood.
Despite this, Japan is still continuing to advance its nuclear wastewater discharge plan. Tokyo Electric Power Company began trial operation of the Fukushima nuclear power plant's nuclear wastewater discharge facility on June 12th. This trial operation temporarily replaces nuclear wastewater with clean water, which is diluted by seawater and discharged into the sea through an underwater tunnel.
The trial operation will last for two weeks, and TEPCO plans to officially start discharging nuclear wastewater in the summer of 2023.
