The Qinghai Tibet Plateau, with an average altitude of 4000 meters, is vast and has a harsh climate. For thousands of years, the Tibetan people have accumulated rich treatment experience and created a unique medical system with the continuous development of their understanding of the universe, life, human body, and diseases. One of them is the Shannan Tibetan Medical Bathing Method. In 2014, the Shannan Tibetan Medical Bathing Method was listed as a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage.
The Shannan Tibetan medicinal bath method involves soaking the body in hot springs or medicinal juices, absorbing or sweating through the skin, to achieve the goals of dispelling cold, dispelling wind, sweating and diuresis, reducing swelling and pain, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and relieving dampness and itching. The commonly used hot spring water for hot spring baths is sulfur hot spring, cold water stone hot spring, alum stone hot spring, Wulingzhi hot spring, and limestone hot spring. The medicinal bath mainly uses five Tibetan herbs as the basic formula and adds medicine according to the symptoms, known as the "Five Flavors Ganlu" bath. For those with indigestion caused by wind cold, medicines such as cold water stone, long pepper, ginger, etc. can be finely ground and added to the bath water to enhance the medicinal effect.
As a safe, green, economical, and convenient health practice, this heritage project has played a positive role in improving the health level of the people, prolonging life, regulating behavior, promoting social harmony, and protecting the ecological environment in the high-altitude living environment of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.
