Yanchuan County has a profound historical and cultural heritage, with many traditional villages with unique characteristics in northern Shaanxi. In 2019, 8 villages including Liangjiahe and Zhenjiawan were included in the fifth batch of China's traditional village list. In 2020, 12 villages including Gaojiagetai and Liujiagou were included in the third batch of Shaanxi Province's traditional village list. On March 29, 2022, Yanchuan County was included in the list of demonstration counties for the centralized and contiguous protection and utilization of traditional villages in China in 2022.

Zhenjiawan Village, located 15 kilometers northwest of Yanchuan County on Qingping River, is one of the fifth batch of national traditional villages, dating back more than 750 years. There are currently 258 ancient kiln caves in 97 courtyards, making it the largest and most complete ancient kiln cave community in northern Shaanxi. These cave dwellings are mainly made of flower walls and stone kilns, situated on the mountain, with layered kilns and stacked courtyards, arranged in a neat and orderly manner. In 2017, following the principle of restoring the old and preserving the local style, Zhenjiawan Village took the lead in implementing the "Three Transformations" reform in rural areas in Yan'an City. All the property rights of the 258 ancient cave dwellings in 97 academies were transferred to the village collective economic cooperative, focusing on creating four bases for film and television shooting, educational research, sketching creation, and cultural experience. The idle cave dwellings in the new village were also transferred to create "cave dwellings hotels", supporting and improving infrastructure to promote increased income for farmers.

By revitalizing idle courtyards, a 14 courtyard 64 hole homestay hotel will be built, along with supporting infrastructure such as tourist toilets, parking lots, sewage treatment stations, and tourist reception centers. More than 30 production teams, including "The Founding of the People," came to the ancient village for filming. More than 2000 famous teachers and students came to study in the ancient village, and more than 3900 famous teachers and students from Nanjing Academy of Fine Arts came to create in the ancient village.
By relying on the "four bases", farmers can obtain three stable incomes: rent, stock capital, and salary on the original basis. The per capita net income of farmers has increased from 5800 yuan before 2017 to 22317 yuan in 2022, and the village collective economy has grown from zero to 318000 yuan in 2022.
Liujiagou Village, also included in the third batch of Shaanxi Province's traditional village list, is also undergoing pilot property rights reform.
Liujiagou Village is located 15 kilometers northwest of Yanchuan County and is the third batch of traditional villages in Shaanxi Province. In 1969, 26 Beijing educated youth came here to settle down and leave behind educated youth caves. In 1983, the movie "Life" adapted from the novel of the same name by Lu Yao was filmed here.
Liujiagou Village Canteen
The cave dwellings and courtyards in the village were once idle and dilapidated due to the relocation of their owners. How can they be protected and utilized? Liujiagou Village has decided to revitalize the resources of the ancient village and transfer idle educated youth caves and other resources.
As of now, Liujiagou Village has transferred a total of 87 old cave dwellings, built 3 farmhouses, 5 homestays, 3 distilleries, 3 freshly squeezed sesame oil, 6 intangible cultural heritage exhibition halls, and 3 powder leakage workshops. These transferred cave dwellings follow the operation model of "village collective+company+farmers" to develop tourism, promote the integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries, and effectively drive collective economy and farmer income.
When the reporter interviewed on June 1, he saw that the cave dwelling accommodation facilities here were complete, neat and orderly, the sorghum wine in the winery was mellow, and the intangible cultural handicrafts such as paper pile, Paper Cuttings in the exhibition hall of intangible cultural relics were fresh and vivid, and the villagers were all involved.

The data shows that in 2022, the per capita net income of Liujiagou Village was 15800 yuan, and the collective income of the village was 320000 yuan.
From Zhenjiawan Village to Liujiagou Village, Yanchuan County's approach to the protection and utilization of traditional villages can be summarized as follows: adhering to high-level promotion, planning guidance, pilot projects, emphasizing the inheritance of style, revitalization and utilization, and emphasizing the construction of village halls.
It is understood that Yanchuan County has taken the lead in implementing six pilot projects for the protection and utilization of traditional villages.
