Discharged into the sea, over 1500 tons of Japanese nuclear contaminated water
The discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, continues. According to data released by TEPCO, as of midnight local time on the 28th, approximately 1551 tons of nuclear contaminated water have been discharged. At the same time, Japanese media reported that Tokyo Electric Power Company, as the implementing party, is operating in a worrying state.
The discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea is an important step for East Television to promote the scrapping of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. According to multiple Japanese media reports, the scrapping of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is expected to cost 8 trillion yen, of which about three-quarters will be used to remove about 880 tons of nuclear residue generated by core melting. Due to the unknown internal conditions of the reactor, the actual cost may increase. In addition, TEPCO also needs to bear the cost of nuclear pollution control and compensation related to nuclear accidents, and TEPCO is facing severe expenditure pressure.

According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun's estimate, TEPCO needs to achieve an operating profit of at least 300 billion yen every year to bear this series of expenses. But according to the current understanding, the profitability of TEPCO is declining, and there is a significant gap from this goal. According to the financial report released by TEPCO, as of March 2022, TEPCO had a huge deficit with a net loss of over 120 billion yen.
The main reason for the operational difficulties is that Dongdian currently accounts for nearly 80% of its thermal power generation, and related fuels rely on imports. Under the impact of rising global energy prices, Dongdian's power generation costs have significantly increased. Although TEPCO still owns the Kashizaki Haya nuclear power plant, due to frequent safety hazards, TEPCO has been unable to start the plant, making it difficult to break free from its reliance on thermal power generation.
