A few years ago, in order to verify the authenticity of the claim that "marble radiation poses a health hazard", CCTV conducted an investigation and reported that in the building materials market, Zhu Li, Executive Deputy Director of the Radiation Protection Office of Tsinghua University, used professional instruments to conduct on-site testing of the radiation value of marble. The results show that several marble samples belong to Class A building materials, which can be safely used without any restrictions on their scope of use.

CCTV has also conducted scientific testing on the radioactivity of various building materials on the market by inviting authoritative institutions.

"The marble samples sent for inspection have detected lower levels of radioactivity, even lower than wood, glass, and ceramic tiles, but they are all within the national control standards for radioactivity, so there is no need to panic," said the inspector.

Zhu Li introduced that there are currently two national standards for building radioactive materials: first, whether the radioactivity of building materials exceeds the standard should refer to the national standard GB-6566 "Radionuclide Limits for Building Materials"; second, whether the radioactivity inside the building exceeds the standard. Please refer to the national standard GB-50325 "Code for Indoor Environmental Pollution Control in Civil Building Engineering".

According to this standard, if it is detected that the radioactivity in the stone or building exceeds the standard, the relevant department can initiate a responsibility lawsuit against the supplier of the materials that exceed the standard and impose corresponding penalties.

So, how much dose is safe to measure nuclear radiation at home?

The reporter found on the official website of the National Nuclear Safety Administration that the radiation dose limit for the public in China is 1 millisievert per year, which is consistent with the standard set by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In special circumstances, if the average annual dose for five consecutive years does not exceed 1mSv, the effective dose for a single year can be increased to 5mSv.
