According to reports, a Boeing 787 took off from Miami International Airport at 11 pm local time last Sunday, heading towards the Chilean capital Santiago. The pilot is Captain Ivan Andorra, who is 56 years old this year.
Not long after the plane took off, Andorra felt uncomfortable and went to the bathroom.
A passenger recalled that about 40 minutes after takeoff, the co pilot suddenly asked if there was a doctor in the cabin. At that time, Andorra was found lying in the bathroom with a sudden cardiac arrest.
The crew tried their best to salvage Andorra, but to no avail.
Finally, the co pilot had to make an emergency landing at Tokumen International Airport in Panama to seek help. Medical staff provided first aid to Andorra there, but he was still declared dead.
The plane stayed at the boarding gate for half an hour before the airline announced the cancellation of the flight.
Nurse Isadora, who participated in the rescue, stated that they did not have enough necessary supplies to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in Andorra, but she did not specify what these supplies were. She believes that Latin American airlines need to pay attention to material issues in health and medical emergencies.
It is reported that before joining Latin American Airlines, Andorra was a Chilean Air Force pilot with extensive flying experience. His wife passed away in 2017, leaving behind his only daughter Sofia Andorra.
