Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the United States: The "Quadrilateral Mechanism" of the United States, Japan, India, and Australia will not expand to the Pacific at this stage | Cooperation | China | Hope | South Korea | Dawson | Quadrilateral Mechanism
On August 14th, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Dawson, stated on the "Quadrilateral Mechanism" between the United States, Japan, India, and Australia that "there are no plans to expand the number of participating countries at this stage."
According to Kyodo News Agency on August 14th, Dawson showed caution when it came to news that South Korea had officially joined the "quadrilateral mechanism", and emphasized that cooperation with countries outside the four countries would be promoted separately in different fields.
South Korea expressed interest in participating in the working group of the Quadrilateral Mechanism, but Dawson said he was not aware that South Korea wanted to participate as a formal member state. She stated that the policy of not expanding capacity is a consensus among the four countries, and at the Japan US South Korea summit held in the United States on August 18th, "Quad is unlikely to become the main topic.".
Dawson stated that satellite information sharing in the surrounding waters of countries in the Indian Ocean Pacific region has been promoted through the "quadrilateral mechanism".
On March 7, 2023, a senior South Korean official announced that the South Korean government would accelerate its participation in the "quadrilateral mechanism" of the United States, Japan, India, and Australia. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference on March 8 that China has repeatedly expressed its position on the "quadrilateral mechanism". China has always believed that cooperation between countries should follow the trend of peaceful development and should not create closed and exclusive circles.
Mao Ning pointed out that China hopes that relevant countries can do more things that are conducive to regional national security and mutual trust, as well as regional peace and stability. I hope that the relevant countries will not provoke opposition and will not engage in closed and exclusive circles.
