Deeply concerned, the United Nations Security Council is urgently meeting! Chinese representative: Seriously concerned about the damage to the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam | Dam | Destruction
On June 6th local time, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on the damage to the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam. The Chinese representative expressed serious concern over the damage to the hydroelectric dam and called on all parties to maintain rational restraint and resume peace talks.
Martin Griffith, Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations, gave an on-site briefing. Griffith said that the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovka Hydropower Station is the most serious civil facility destruction event since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which will have a profound impact on both banks of the Dnieper River in the coming days. Griffith stated that the United Nations is urgently responding by providing assistance to over 16000 affected civilians.
Representatives from multiple countries called on all parties to ensure the safety of civilian facilities in military operations.
Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun stated in his speech that China is seriously concerned about the damage to the Kakhovka Dam and deeply concerned about the humanitarian, economic, and ecological impacts it has caused. China calls on all parties involved in conflicts to abide by international humanitarian law and fully protect civilians and civilian facilities. China supports active action by the United Nations and relevant humanitarian organizations to provide full assistance for personnel transfer and follow-up assistance.
Regarding the impact of the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Zhang Jun reiterated that once a nuclear disaster occurs, no one can be alone. China calls for maximum restraint, avoiding words and actions that may escalate confrontation and lead to misjudgment, and maintaining the safety and security of the nuclear power plant.
Zhang Jun expressed that China is concerned about the prolonged or even further escalation of the Ukrainian crisis. The recent incident once again reminds us that anything can happen in a conflict situation, and the spread of war will only exacerbate pain and disasters, bringing more unpredictable and significant risks. All parties involved should maintain rational restraint and resume peace talks as soon as possible. The international community should make every effort with a greater sense of urgency to create favorable conditions for promoting dialogue and negotiations and restoring peace. Neither party, especially those with significant influence, should do anything to fuel the conflict, let alone attempt to profit from the escalation of the crisis and serve their own strategic objectives.
Zhang Jun reiterated that China will continue to stand on the side of peace and make unremitting efforts with relevant partners to promote peace talks and achieve a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
