Crisis! Africa declares a state of emergency in the Amhara region | Amhara state | state of emergency
According to Reuters on August 4th, the Federal Government of Ethiopia declared a state of emergency on August 4th, and the country's military has been in continuous conflict with armed militants in the northern Amhara region recently.
According to reports, Amhara Oblast is the second largest state in Ethiopia. Earlier this week, a conflict broke out between the Ethiopian Defense Forces and the local armed group Fano, which quickly escalated into a serious security crisis.
The office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed has issued a statement to implement a state of emergency, but has not clearly stated whether the state of emergency will be implemented in Amhara Oblast or nationwide.
The statement said, "It is now necessary to declare a state of emergency, as the conventional legal system is no longer able to control this heinous activity."

The state of emergency grants the government the power to impose curfews and prohibit public gatherings.
The report mentioned that the Amhara state government has sent a request for assistance letter to the governor on the 3rd, requesting the federal government to help restore order. The letter stated that the turbulent situation is causing "serious economic, social, and humanitarian losses". It is reported that the conflict has led to the suspension of flights in several important cities in the local area.
The US Embassy in Ethiopia issued a security warning on the evening of the 3rd, calling on US citizens not to travel to Amhara state.
Amhara Oblast is adjacent to Tigre Oblast. In the civil war between the Ethiopian Defense Forces and the Tigray armed forces that ended in November last year, "Fano" was an ally of the Defense Forces. But the relationship between the two continues to deteriorate due to the central government's actions to weaken local armed forces.
