In 2017, Shanghai International Tourism Resort, with Disney projects as its core, was rated as the second batch of low-carbon development practice areas in Shanghai, and carried out a five-year pilot practice activity. In 2023, the low-carbon development practice area of the resort was evaluated as "excellent" by the Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau and was rated as a low-carbon development demonstration zone in Shanghai.

The resort adheres to the principle of combining Disney's global standards with local best practices, always implementing green, smart, low-carbon concepts and the requirements of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" goals, actively creating a low-carbon development practice zone in Shanghai, and continuously promoting the "Top Ten Green and Low Carbon Projects" to create a green, low-carbon, and ecological tourism environment for tourists.

Green energy

Shanghai Disneyland is the first of six Disneyland parks in the world to adopt natural gas distributed cogeneration energy technology. It integrates natural gas power generation, waste heat utilization and other functions, with an average energy utilization rate of over 80%. By ensuring the energy demand of the park, 75000 tons of carbon dioxide can be reduced annually.

The installed photovoltaic capacity of the energy center is 733kW, with an annual power generation of approximately 810000 kW · h; Da Tong Music Valley has installed 56 photovoltaic car sheds and charging piles, with an annual power generation of approximately 150000 kW · h.

Green buildings

The total green building area of the resort is 210000 square meters, including 1 national three-star green building design sign, 3 national two-star green building design signs, and 1 LEED gold grade building.

In 2023, Shanghai Disney Resort obtained LEED Platinum certification for its existing community, becoming the world's first resort to receive the highest level of LEED certification.

Green transportation

Improve the public transportation system and reduce private car travel. Tourists can take public rail transit Line 11, airport connecting line and Line 21, and urban buses to and from the resort area. New energy shuttle buses within the park can reach various scenic spots. The proportion of public transportation travel is 90%, and the proportion of new energy and clean energy buses in the park is 100%.

Improve the slow traffic system and promote green travel. The slow traffic system consists of a 22 kilometer long pedestrian path and a 12 kilometer cycling path. More than 10 scenic roads, 10 kilometers of Chuandi River, and 2.5 kilometers of Xingyuan Lake waterfront greenway provide tourists with a safe and comfortable walking and cycling environment.

Build a smart parking system to promote electrified travel. Set up 28 high-power charging stations for buses, which can complete electric shuttle bus charging within 3 hours. Promote the distributed "wind and solar charging and storage" smart new energy project in the energy center, and also have photovoltaic car sheds located at the Wonderful Road shuttle station and the Diga RV campsite.

Resource conservation

Promote garbage classification and recycling. A compressed domestic waste transfer station will be built in the resort, covering the centralized transfer of domestic waste in the core area. The coverage rate of domestic waste classification is 100%, and the utilization rate of domestic waste resources is 45%.

Promote the recycling and utilization of water resources. The resort uses the treated river water from the comprehensive water treatment plant for irrigation and toilet flushing within the park, and automatically adjusts the irrigation method according to the weather. Compared with traditional water systems, it can save about 25% of irrigation water.

Assist in plastic reduction actions. Set up fine sorting garbage bins for recyclable materials in public areas; Promote reusable tableware, shopping bags, and hotel bathing products in restaurants, shops, hotels, and other areas.

Ecological protection

Create distinctive parks and green spaces. The total area of green space is 2.46 million square meters, with a green coverage rate of 35% and a three-dimensional green area of 12050 square meters.

There are currently two boutique parks in the resort, Xingyuan Park and Lavender Park. As a four-star urban park in Shanghai, Xingyuan Park covers an area of 50 hectares and is a large artificial wetland park. As a national 4A level tourist attraction, Lavender Park covers an area of 90 hectares and is currently the largest lavender flower field in Shanghai.

Connect the riverside greenway and the continuous landscape interface. In 2023, the resort will implement a landscape improvement project for the 10 kilometer Chuandi River waterfront urban park belt, combining the renovation of existing flood control channels to build slow traffic spaces such as cycling paths, walking paths, and fitness paths, and improve service facilities such as leisure stations, direct drinking water, and public toilets along the line. Deeply explore water and land events such as rowing, fitness running, and hiking around the Chuandi River to enrich the park's activity experience.

Ensure the water quantity and quality of rivers and lakes. The key indicators of Xingyuan Lake have reached Class II of the national surface water environmental quality standard, creating a happy river and lake vacation experience for citizens and tourists.

The resort has planted over 1000 types of trees, shrubs, and grasses, and the Shendi Ring Road has created a distinctive seasonal road greening, which is a characteristic road for greening in Shanghai. Sunshine Avenue, with its shade covered by heavy yangmu trees, has been rated as a tree lined avenue in Shanghai.

The magnolias on Disney Avenue, the cherry blossoms on Star Street, and the ginkgo leaves on Wonderful Road form a unique natural beauty of the resort.

Through 8 years of monitoring, more than 120 species of wild birds and 4 species of national second level protected animals have been discovered.

Green Classroom

Create a "tourism+education" natural classroom. Integrate biodiversity scientific monitoring with nature education activities, and carry out various types of nature education activities such as praising the Earth, garbage classification, plastic reduction actions, and bird watching.

Build a garbage classification education demonstration site as an environmental education base in Pudong New Area, open to the public for free. On the first floor, there is an area for on-site environmental sanitation learning and garbage classification training, and on the second floor, there is an exhibition hall to explain the waste treatment process and destination of the resort.

In 2023, the resort released the "Shanghai Disneyland Flower Appreciation Map", "Star Wishing Park Bird Viewing Map", and the first "Green and Low Carbon Map of the Resort", and held the launch ceremony of the 42nd "Bird Love Week" in Shanghai and the first Disney Nature Forum.
