CCTV News: Series Report "Beautiful China · Summer Tour" Today, we walked into the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park together. The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, officially established on October 12, 2021, is located at the border of Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, with a total area of 1.4065 million hectares. It preserves the most complete and typical wild animal population in the temperate forests of Northeast China. Since the launch of the national park pilot program, governments and relevant departments at all levels in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces have closely cooperated, and the ecosystem in the park has been comprehensively protected and restored. The forest stock has increased, making it the only stable habitat and source of dispersal for wild Northeast tigers and leopards in China. Among them, the number of wild Northeast tigers increased to over 50, and the number of wild Northeast leopards increased to over 60; The survival rate of tiger and leopard cubs has also increased from 33% before the establishment of the park to over 50% now.

The Northeast tiger is the flagship species for global biodiversity conservation and plays an irreplaceable role in maintaining healthy ecosystem functions. However, due to increased human activities, forest disappearance and degradation, this species was once on the brink of extinction in China. On August 19, 2017, the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park launched pilot work. After years of effort, the number of tigers and leopards in the Dongning area of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park has steadily increased, with a total of 15 Northeast tigers and 27 Northeast leopards discovered.
The Dongning area of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park is an important cross-border corridor for China and Russia's Northeast Tiger and Leopard. Staff explained that in the past, due to natural forest logging, there were no signs of Northeast Tiger activity found here for nearly a decade. The Northeast tiger is at the top of the food chain, and its existence means that there are sufficient numbers of animals at various nutritional levels in the entire ecosystem.

Since the launch of the national park pilot program, the local area of Dongning has focused on the protection of the wild populations and habitats of Northeast tigers and leopards, and has coordinated the two pilot projects, problem rectification, monitoring and supervision, livelihood improvement, cross-border cooperation, and other work. The number of wild populations of Northeast tigers and leopards in the area has achieved stable growth.
In recent years, the local government has continued to carry out special actions such as "clearing mountains and removing traps" and cracking down on indiscriminate hunting, which have opened up the corridor for cross-border migration of tigers and leopards. Meanwhile, habitat restoration measures such as creating mixed forests have created a favorable habitat for tigers, leopards, and their prey resources.
