"Let's all think together, where will the firefly fly fly next?" "In the fields." "Okay, what does it want to do in the fields?" "Illuminate the scarecrow." "Compete with the cuckoo bird."... Recently, in the public reading class at the "Craftsmanship Studio" in Shengbei Community, Beiqiao Street, Xiangcheng District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, children's imaginations were unleashed to the fullest. ".
The teacher for this class is Zhou Caihong, a resident of Shengbei Community and a famous children's literature writer in Suzhou. She has published multiple children's works and has been praised by parents as a "good teacher who makes children fall in love with reading.". How to leverage the role of this "capable person"? In 2022, Shengbei Community approached Zhou Caihong and invited her to participate in community development.
As a resettlement community, the permanent population of Shengbei Community is about 13000 people, with a large population base, a large number of elderly people, and serious outflow of young and middle-aged people.
"To achieve a new pattern of co construction, co governance, and sharing, it is necessary to effectively activate the power of models and gather the collective efforts of the whole nation. By playing the role of 'capable people and skilled craftsmen' well, the difficulties in grassroots social governance can be solved!" Wang Yin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shengbei Community, introduced the starting point of establishing the 'Craftsmanship Workshop'.
Through methods such as public visits and resident recommendations, the "skilled craftsmen" of Shengbei Community have been discovered. Starting from 2022, a team of passionate and philanthropic "capable people" has been formed.
On February 23rd of this year, "Craftsmanship Studio" was officially established, attracting 7 "skilled craftsmen" including Zhou Caihong. The community has built a 30 square meter studio for them. Reading, writing, silk tapestry, nuclear carving, bead carving, traditional Chinese opera, from craftsmanship classes to life services, and then to intangible cultural heritage experiences, members of the "Craftsmanship Studio" and community workers brainstorm to make the content and form of activities more diverse and meet the different needs of residents.
"I'm getting old and it's troublesome to go out and get a haircut. I didn't expect the barber to come to my doorstep and it's still free." During the charity haircut event, the resident building's uncle said after finishing his haircut, "The community is so considerate!"
Barber Shen Yiping has been in the industry for nearly 30 years. When she first joined "Craftsmanship Studio", she felt a bit uneasy when she saw that the members were all "cultural figures" and "master craftsmen".
Love and righteousness scissors lined up in a long line, which made Shen Yiping feel a sense of achievement. "I'm not very old now, and I hope to make more contributions to the community. Coincidentally, a few people gathered together to do their best, continue to shine and spread this love, and we are also very happy."
With the high voice of the masses, the community designated the 15th day of each month as its exclusive "Happiness Day", allowing residents to enjoy various volunteer activities led by studio members on this day. Free haircuts are a routine activity on Happiness Day.
In addition, cultural courses, experiential activities, and traditional Chinese opera performances brought by studio members will also be interspersed.
Nowadays, more and more "capable people" spontaneously come to join studios and contribute to the community. Gu Rongkun is the leader of an erhu team in Beiqiao Street. Upon learning that the studio's unique services have received high praise, he enthusiastically rushed over and expressed his willingness to bring a team of people to assist.
Recently, "Craftsmanship Studio" and Beiqiao Central Primary School have established a community school joint construction base, committed to carrying out the "Intangible Cultural Heritage Masters in the Classroom, in-service teachers in the Community" activity, and spreading "craftsmanship" to a wider world.
"Capable people" are active in every corner of the community, and the appearance of residents in the community is quietly changing. The community's exclusive "Happiness Day" has also achieved everyone's happiness.
