"I will perform at my best and look forward to encountering strong opponents. I will focus all my energy on winning the game," said Kenneth Mwanbu, a Ugandan badminton player and engineering college student, in an interview with reporters about the Chengdu Universiade. His face was filled with anticipation.
Mwanbu will participate in the 31st World University Summer Games in Chengdu with more than 30 other Ugandan university students. In a poorly equipped badminton stadium in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, he shared his growth experience with reporters during his training.
Mwanbu's family is very poor. Since starting formal badminton training in 2016, he has been striving to obtain training equipment through various channels, including the most basic rackets and badminton. With his love for badminton, he overcame various difficulties and through hard training, finally joined the Uganda national badminton team in 2021, which gave him the opportunity to participate in some international competitions.
Mwanbu has never been to China and is looking forward to this trip to Chengdu. He also stated that the competition at the Universiade will be very difficult and intense, and he has made sufficient psychological preparations.
Freddie Kirabo, the head coach of Mwanbu's badminton team, said that the Chengdu Universiade is a rare opportunity, "for our team and our badminton project, it is a valuable learning opportunity.".
In a swimming pool in Kampala, multimedia college student Emmanuel Kiwanuka is having the final training session with his teammates before the Universiade. He told reporters that he has been preparing for the Chengdu Universiade for a long time and looks forward to achieving good results for his country in Chengdu.
"I will practice for six days a week. My wish is to create my personal best results and win medals," he said, looking forward to the upcoming Universiade competition. At the same time, "in Chengdu, I will meet athletes from all over the world and experience the different cultures they represent."
Patrick Sabraba, Deputy Head of the Ugandan delegation to the Chengdu Universiade, recently expressed appreciation for the high-level preparation work for the event in an interview with reporters. He said that communication between the event organizers and the participating parties, including Uganda, has always been very smooth.
China's achievements in promoting the development of sports have impressed Sabraba. "I am very eager to go to Chengdu and want to see the venues in the photos with my own eyes and experience the sports facilities there." He said that the Ugandan delegation has prepared for the Chengdu Universiade and believes that it will be an unforgettable event.
