The 22nd is the Dragon Boat Festival. From dragon boat rowing to eating Zongzi, from taking "noon water" to laying eggs, people in the island celebrate traditional festivals in various forms to express their hopes for a better life.
On that day, the Dajia Riverside Park located in Zhongshan District, Taipei City was bustling with visitors, and the 2023 Taipei Dragon Boat Championships began here. On the Keelung River, dragon boats set off from under the Dazhi Bridge and raced from east to west, with drums ringing; On both sides of the Keelung River, the cheers and shouts of the people kept coming and going.

According to the Taipei Sports Bureau, the organizer, the tournament will last for 3 days, attracting 210 teams and approximately 5100 athletes from both inside and outside the island. It will be divided into multiple groups, including men's, women's, and mixed groups, and will cover both large and small dragon boats.
Xu Yinzhuan, a Taipei citizen and member of the "Love the Road, Mighty Grass" dragon boat team, has participated in the Taipei Dragon Boat Championships for many consecutive years. "We also participated in the Dragon Boat Festival two years ago and last year. Due to the epidemic, everyone had to wear masks. In this year's Dragon Boat Festival competition, participants can take off their masks, and the audience has increased significantly compared to previous years, which feels particularly exciting," said Xu Yinzhuan.
The dragon boat race has become a custom because of commemorating the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Before the race, several dragon boat teams, such as "Love the Road, Love the Grass", went to Qu Yuan Palace in Beitou District, Taipei City to highlight the dragon boat race in accordance with the ancient rites, and participated in the traditional river worship ceremony to welcome Qu Yuan's statue around the scene.

To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, Zongzi is naturally indispensable. For many Taipei citizens, the time-honored shops in Nanmen Market have always been the best choice to buy Zongzi.
On the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, reporters visited the Nanmen market. Zongzi of various flavors dazzled people and attracted long queues.
Nanmen Market's time-honored stall Nanyuan Food Store specializes in Zhejiang flavors, with Huzhou fresh meat zongzi being the most famous. The Huzhou zongzi in Nanyuan is wrapped in five pieces of zongzi leaves, forming a long strip and is affectionately referred to as "pillow zongzi" by the people on the island.
"Huzhou rice dumplings are thin and glutinous, and fresh meat is not firewood." said Miss Tao, a Taipei citizen who specially came to the Nanmen Market to buy Huzhou rice dumplings, "I always eat Huzhou rice dumplings at home when I was young. Later, I went to Huzhou several times, all for Zongzi."

Wang Quanguo, president of the Nanmen Market Autonomous Association, said that although the raw materials had increased this year, Zongzi kept the original price as much as possible, or only increased by NT $5 to NT $10. He hoped that more people could feel the traditional characteristics of the Nanmen Market during the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival is also regarded as a festival for praying for blessings and warding off evil spirits. In addition to inserting mugwort and calamus, wearing colorful ropes and sachets, many Taiwanese people are also enthusiastic about traditional customs such as fetching "noon water" and laying eggs, expressing their hopes for a better life.
Taking "noon water" is a distinctive festival custom. People seek "noon water" during the Dragon Boat Festival at noon, which is said to be used for brewing tea and wine, with a particularly fragrant and mellow taste. It also has functions such as removing impurities, transporting, relieving heat, and eliminating epidemics. There is even a saying in the folk that "drinking a sip of water at noon is better than taking medicine for three years".
Tieanshan Jianjing, located in Dajia District, Taichung City, is a well-known "noon water" intake area on the island. On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, the number of people queuing on site was even higher than in previous years, and the organizer of the water collection event prepared 500 portions of "afternoon water" which were quickly distributed. Some people who cannot access mountain spring water and well water adopt alternative methods, preparing bottled tap water or mineral water in advance, and placing it outdoors for drying at noon, in order to make their own "noon water" to pray for blessings and ward off evil spirits.

At the activity site of Dajia Riverside Park, many parents take their children and use colored pens to draw various patterns on the eggshells, write their names and the words "Happy Dragon Boat Festival", and then try to stand the eggs, which is both nervous and interesting. People believe that successfully standing an egg at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival will bring good luck to themselves and their families for a year.
Taipei resident Wang Zhiqing participated in an egg laying event with his children on site. In his view, this is not only a custom of praying for good luck, but also a festive reunion. "In the evening, we will also participate in the traditional round the border activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. In addition, we will set up eggs, eat Zongzi and watch the dragon boat race. The Dragon Boat Festival is very happy and complete."
