Chinese Government's Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, Li Hui: Contributing Chinese Power to the Political Solution of the Ukraine Crisis Position | Crisis | Politics
In order to further promote China's stance on political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis and promote the international community to gather more consensus on restoring peace, in mid to late May, as the Chinese government's Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, I visited Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany, the EU headquarters, and Russia for in-depth communication and exchange with all parties.
Since the comprehensive escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a responsible major country, has always upheld an objective and fair position and actively promoted peace talks. On February 24th of this year, China released the "China Position on Political Resolution of the Ukrainian Crisis" document, which proposed 12 proposals, including respecting the sovereignty of all countries, abandoning the Cold War mentality, ceasing and ending the war, and initiating peace talks, which have been widely recognized and praised by the international community.
The theme of my visit this time is to promote peace and promote talks. During the visit, I had in-depth exchanges of views and opinions with Ukrainian President Zelensky, Foreign Minister Kuleba, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, and colleagues from various European countries regarding the political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. All parties appreciate and actively evaluate China's efforts to restore peace and politically resolve the Ukrainian crisis, and look forward to China playing a greater role. This once again demonstrates that China's position on the Ukraine issue is objective and fair, and has received support from most countries in the international community.
During the communication, all parties expressed concerns about the escalation of the current crisis and the risk of spillovers. The safety of nuclear facilities in conflict zones has attracted high attention from all parties, and once a nuclear accident occurs, no country can stand alone. The risks of food security, energy security, and cross-border infrastructure security caused by this crisis are still fermenting. The conflict can only be ended through negotiations. If there is a ceasefire and negotiations one day earlier, there is hope of peace one day earlier. As long as there is a glimmer of hope for peace, efforts should be made actively, rather than letting conflicts continue, let alone adding fuel to the fire, causing local conflicts to escalate into large-scale wars, even nuclear wars. At present, it seems that there may still be many difficulties for all parties to sit down and negotiate and achieve results, but what is important is to promote the cohesion of consensus among all parties, form the maximum common denominator, and gradually accumulate and create conditions for the final resolution of the crisis.
China has no selfish interests in the Ukraine issue, does not form a "small circle", does not pour oil into the fire, and does not take advantage of the situation to profit. China has always believed that in order to solve this complex and far-reaching crisis, we must not only urge peace talks to cease hostilities as soon as possible, but also promote the construction of a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture, committed to long-term stability. Therefore, the international community should adhere to a common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security concept to better maintain world peace and stability.
Currently, an increasing number of countries and insightful individuals around the world are calling for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, an end to the conflict, and the restoration of regional peace and stability. China is willing to continue to work with the international community to stand on the side of peace, dialogue, and historical correctness, and contribute to world peace and tranquility.
