Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng: There is no winner in the conflict between China and the United States, and the world cannot afford it
On August 29, 2023, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, was invited to give a keynote speech at the 5th Forbes China US Business Forum, focusing on promoting the bright prospects of China's economic development and elaborating on China US relations and economic and trade cooperation between the two countries in depth.
Xie Feng said that the world and China US relations are once again at a crossroads of where to go. The theme of this forum, "The New Way Forward," is of great practical significance. We look forward to the forum building a bridge of communication, opening a window of cooperation, promoting China and the United States to move towards each other, jointly exploring ways to move forward, finding a way out of turmoil and governance in the world, exploring the correct way for China and the United States to coexist in the new era, and expanding mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States.
Xie Feng said that in today's world, there are intertwined changes and unstable economic recovery momentum, and every country has its own difficulties to remember. Everyone is on the same boat. Only by working together can we overcome difficulties together. No one can stand alone, let alone harm others for personal gain. Engaging in camp confrontation cannot bring peace and security, decoupling and breaking the chain will only become a cocoon for oneself, and there are no winners in the conflict and confrontation between China and the United States, which the world cannot bear. Both sides should seize the opportunity, move towards each other, eliminate obstacles and control differences through actions, strengthen dialogue and expand cooperation with sincerity, and fundamentally follow the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
Xie Feng said that this is my third time working in the United States, and I have returned to my hometown after 13 years. The world and China and the United States have undergone many changes, but the importance of China US relations to the world and the two countries has not changed. The reality of the integration of interests and interdependence between the two countries has not changed. The enthusiasm of the two peoples for strengthening exchanges and expanding cooperation has not changed, and the international community's expectations for the healthy and stable development of China US relations have not changed. To keep up with the times and embark on a path forward, and fully leverage the role of China US economic and trade relations as a ballast and propeller, we need to strengthen our confidence, eliminate interference, and take action. The most precious confidence comes from the bright prospects of China's open development, the most prominent interference lies in the real risk of decoupling and disconnection between China and the United States, and the most effective action relies on the concerted efforts of knowledgeable people from all walks of life.
Xie Feng said that since the beginning of this year, the Chinese economy has maintained a positive trend of recovery, and high-quality development has been solidly promoted, with a strong momentum of innovation and green development. The post epidemic economic recovery is a process of wave like development and tortuous progress. We need to see both trees and forests, and we need to look at the present and the long run. China has the most complete industrial system, the most dynamic domestic demand market, a large number of high-quality workers and entrepreneurs, a rich inventory of policy toolboxes, and the long-term positive fundamentals of the Chinese economy have not changed. Singing down others will not make oneself better, only then can China continue to develop and the world become more prosperous. We will continue to follow the path of opening up and eat the rice of reform. We welcome everyone to share the new opportunities brought by China's new development.
Xie Feng said that in the past, the US repeatedly proposed to encourage China to expand investment access, but now it has set its own restrictions. The US has issued an administrative order to review foreign investment, which goes against the principle of free trade. This not only fails to contain China, but also restricts the development rights of US companies in China, starting at the expense of others and ending at the expense of itself; In the past, the US repeatedly proposed to China to provide a fair competition environment, but now it deprives Chinese companies of their participation rights and includes more than 1300 Chinese companies and individuals in various sanctions lists. Is this fair? Is it really in the interest of the United States? Decoupling China and the United States is the greatest risk, confrontation between the two countries is the greatest insecurity, and "de Sinicization" means removing opportunities, cooperation, stability, and development.
Xie Feng said that the hope of China US relations lies in the people and the foundation lies in the people. My important task is to invite those who support China US relations, subtract more from conflicts and differences, add more to dialogue and cooperation, and jointly promote China US relations back on track and steadily move forward. We need to start with specific tasks, such as adjusting travel reminders to China, renewing the China US Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement, holding high-level dialogues on tourism between China and the United States, and addressing the issue of visa difficulties, in order to cultivate more visible and tangible cooperation results. The business community is an important "stakeholder" and should continue to serve as a link for friendly cooperation between China and the United States, making every effort to deepen and expand exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and stabilize the development of China US relations.
The Forbes US China Business Forum was founded in 2019, hosted by Forbes magazine, with the aim of promoting the development of economic and trade relations between China and the United States.
