CCTV News: In recent years, China's shipbuilding industry has shown its advantages, with stable growth in the three major shipbuilding indicators and a world leading market share. In this context, the shipbuilding level of Chinese enterprises has also gained recognition from more international customers. At present, multiple listed shipping companies have full orders in hand.
In the scorching August, at a shipyard in Dalian, Liaoning Province, workers shuttle inside and outside the shipyard, working tirelessly. On a container ship that is scheduled to be delivered on August 21, 2023, the reporter saw staff conducting final polishing and inspection for the delivery of the new ship.

According to the company leader, there has been strong market demand since 2023. At present, the new ship orders received have been scheduled for 2027, although they are not yet at full capacity, the shipbuilding task is still relatively heavy. Taking the upcoming container ship as an example, the shipyard successfully delivered the first one in June 2023, with 7 remaining to be delivered.
The reporter also learned that currently, all orders undertaken by the shipyard come from overseas, mainly LNG ships and cruise ships. According to data from the China Shipbuilding Industry Association, from January to June, China's ship exports amounted to 11.21 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 7.7%. The proportion of exported ships in the total number of new orders received nationwide is 92.9%.

As a representative industry in heavy industry, shipbuilding, like shipping, has a strong cyclical nature. After several years of clearing production capacity, China's shipbuilding industry has also shown a strong recovery trend. What types of ships are currently popular in the market? What changes have occurred in shipbuilding prices and costs?
Staff from multiple shipyards have stated that due to factors such as the global "dual carbon" target, ship type production and fuel improvement are currently transitioning towards greenery and energy conservation, and market segmentation competition is becoming increasingly evident. A person in charge of Guangzhou Shipyard told reporters that currently, car roll on/roll off ships account for over 40% of all enterprise orders.

The reporter also learned during the interview that the main raw material for shipbuilding, steel, has seen an overall decline in prices since 2023, which has also reduced some pressure on the production costs of ships. According to Clarkson data, new shipbuilding prices have continued to rise since 2023. As of the end of June, the new shipbuilding price index was 170.91 points, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%, reaching the highest level since mid January 2009.
The changes in costs and prices have led to frequent semi annual performance forecasts for multiple listed shipping companies. For example, Chinese ships are expected to achieve a net profit attributable to shareholders of 500-600 million yuan in the first half of 2023, a year-on-year increase of approximately 155.43% to 206.51%. China Heavy Industry has turned losses into profits in the first half of the year, with an expected net profit of approximately 190-210 million yuan. Yaxing Anchor Chain is expected to have a net profit of approximately 110 million yuan in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of approximately 89%.
