According to the report of Nihon Keizai Shimbun on July 7, China's academic research ability has significantly improved.
The report states that China's presence in academic research paper publication is increasingly increasing. Nihon Keizai Shimbun cooperated with Elsevier in the Netherlands to analyze the number of papers published by universities around the world. The results show that among the top 500 universities in terms of the number of published papers from 2018 to 2022, Harvard University in the United States ranks first, while Chinese universities such as the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences rank second to fourth.
On June 28th, at the Strong Magnetic Field Science Center Laboratory of Hefei Institute of Materials Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hao Lin was inspecting samples and plasma plumes in vacuum.
Analysis shows that Harvard University has published a larger number of medical papers, while Chinese universities have published a larger number of engineering and natural science papers. Among Japanese universities, the University of Tokyo has the highest number of academic research papers published, ranking 28th in the world. Kyoto University, Osaka University, and Tohoku University rank 82nd, 123rd, and 144th respectively.

Other indicators also demonstrate the improvement of academic capabilities in Chinese universities. Not long ago, Springer Nature Publishing Group released the research contribution ranking of the analyzed subjects by tracking research papers published in 82 high-quality journals.
In the field of natural science research, China surpassed the United States for the first time in 2022 and jumped to the top spot; Ranked third to fifth are Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan, the same as in 2021. In terms of research institutions, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has ranked first for many consecutive years, and six research institutions in China have entered the top 10.
David Swinbanks of Springer Nature Publishing Group pointed out, "Japan still has strong capabilities in the field of science, but it is gradually declining. The Japanese government has been lax in science investment and funding allocation is not sufficient."
The report also stated that the group has released indicators in the field of health sciences. The analysis of papers from 64 major medical journals shows that the United States still ranks first, with 15 out of the top 20 research institutions coming from the United States. Only one institution in Japan has entered the top 100, namely the University of Tokyo, which ranks 64th.
