According to Agence France Presse on July 17th, an opposition leader from the left bank of the Dniester River in Moldova was found dead at home.
According to reports, the internal affairs department on the left bank of the Dniester River said that the body of 47 year old Oleg Holran was found at his home near the main city of Tiraspol in the region.
The department also stated that Holran's body showed "signs of violent death".
The report pointed out that Holran is the leader of the Communist Party in the left bank of the Dniester River region, and he advocates for closer relations with Russia.
A statement from the internal affairs department on the left bank of the Dniester River said, "Oleg Holran's wife found his body in a room next to an open safe. There was nothing in the safe."
The police said that Hall was shot dead. Investigators reported that Holran had "multiple knife injuries" to his neck and back, as well as injuries to his head.
The investigators stated that the murder occurred from July 16th to 17th, and robbery may have been the cause of the murder.
According to reports, Holran was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for insulting the Moldovan authorities and was released in December 2022.
Russian Communist Party Chairman Gennady Juganov called for an immediate investigation into the death of Holran.
Moldova is located between Ukraine and the EU member country Romania. The Dniester River flows through the eastern part of Moldova, but the Slavs on the left bank of the Dniester River established the unrecognized Dniester Coastal Republic in 1990.
In early 1992, the Moroccan government army clashed with the armed forces of the separatist authorities on the left bank of the Dniester River, and Russian troops intervened in the conflict. At the OSCE Summit held in Istanbul, Türkiye, in 1999, Russia promised to withdraw its troops from the left bank of the Dniester River, but the Russian army has not yet withdrawn.
Russian soldiers guard the arsenal near the village of Kolbasna on the left bank of the Dniester River, which contains over 20000 tons of ammunition transported by Soviet troops after withdrawing from Europe. The Russian military task force consists of approximately 1000 personnel, who also provide support to Russian peacekeeping personnel located in the safe isolation zone along the Dniester River.
