Call on the international community to continue supporting the country, as the United Nations Secretary General visits Haiti's Guterres | Haiti | Society
On July 1st local time, UN Secretary General Guterres called on the international community to continue supporting Haiti and dispatch a strong international force to assist the Haitian National Police Force during his visit.
This is Guterres' first visit to Haiti since serving as Secretary General of the United Nations. During the visit, Guterres will meet with local officials such as the Haitian Prime Minister.
Previously, Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, and Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund, visited Haiti. After visiting Haiti, Russell stated that the international community needs to take immediate action to solve the crisis that Haiti is currently facing.
According to a United Nations survey, Haiti is currently facing three major crises: security, politics, and economy. From January to April 2023, over 1400 people died in violent incidents in Haiti, and the increasing number of murders and kidnappings posed a serious threat to the personal safety of local civilians. According to data released by the United Nations Children's Fund on June 15th, nearly 3 million Haitian children needed humanitarian assistance in 2023, setting a historic high.
